Album Notes

Pianist Falkner Evans returns with ARC, his third CD as a leader, and his best yet! Joined by the ace rhythm section of bassist Belden Bullock and drummer Matt Wilson, Evans has produced a recording that crackles with energy, swing, creativity and beauty.

Mixing his original compositions with such jazz standards as Wayne Shorter's "Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum" and John Coltrane's "Central Park West," not to mention a stunning take on the evergreen "Come Rain or Come Shine," Evans and his compatriots strike gold everywhere they look. The interplay between these three musicians is obvious and intimate, allowing listeners to hear a lively conversation among close friends. The understated beauty of Evans's compositions and improvisations is brought into focus by the sharp and sensitive accents delivered by drummer Wilson, while Bullock's deep anchor of powerful sound and swing envelops the whole with grace. Swinging, soulful, compelling and foot-tapping, Falkner Evans's ARC is the epitome of the modern jazz piano trio.

FALKNER EVANS TRIO - ARC
author: Ryan Young
Pianist Falkner Evans has stated that he believes that the beauty of jazz as an art-form is the freedom of expression allowed. That freedom is evident in the spirited improvisation you hear on the third recording (ARC) by the Falkner Evans Trio (with NYC jazz stalwarts bassist Belden Bullock and Matt Wilson). Although heavily improvised, this music is not free-form. The trio follows the classic format of introducing a recognizable melody, but using it primarily as a jumping off point for swinging, deeply-organic, explorations and trio interplay. Evans started out playing pop, rock, blues, western swing (with Asleep at the Wheel), country rock and Brazilian music before switching completely to jazz, but his versatile background subtly comes into play during his improvisations. This is strong modern jazz, based in the traditional jazz trio format, but with contemporary inflections and some fresh risk-taking. You may hear moments similar to the classic trio albums by Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson, but the road branches often and before you know it Falkner Evans is strolling down his own path.
