Album Notes

The Fossil Aerosol Mining Project began in the early 1980s as a loose-knit group of artists and collectors interested in exploring and harvesting the damaged remains of late 20th century popular culture. The project began producing audio recordings in 1983, using literal “found sounds” such as fragments of open reel 1/4” tape and 35mm film recovered from burnt out warehouses and abandoned drive-in theaters. The earliest compositions involved physical tape loops and analog signal processes, which were gradually replaced by digital delay treatments and multi-track manipulation.

"Cassette Recordings" represents the earliest audio work from the Fossil Aerosol Mining Project, recorded and mixed on 4-track cassette decks during the mid-late 1980s. What was to become a 25+ year recording project began with the discovery of a fragment of damaged 35mm film in an abandoned Drive-In theater. Clipped from a circa 1980 Italian zombie movie, the relic was found amongst the debris of a well-mildewed projection booth. Audio from this artifact was used used in a number of recordings, some of which are included here. Nine tracks were remixed or remastered in 1995. The decay of faked decay.
