Album Notes

Hear the history of Fanning Island this little known South Pacific Island and see native life, as it was hundreds of years ago in Polynesian culture (Video incl. on CD-ROM).

Fanning Island lies approximately 250 miles north of the equator and 150 miles northwest of Christmas Island. The natives call it Tabueran, which means Footprint of Heaven and also indicates the shape of the island.

Although inhabitants of Fanning Island have no running water or electricity (yes, that's right: no TV, no cell phones), I have never seen happier people before in my life. In December of 2001, Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCL) made this atoll a stop on their itineraries.

Unfortunately a lot of passengers didn't know what to expect from Fanning Island and left the coral reef with the impression of "poverty in paradise". In order to disprove that statement, we included a 10-minute video documentary.

Facts about Fanning Island can be heard on tracks 1 - 3, while tracks 4 - 14 include traditional drumming and chanting, but also songs that were influenced by western music.

The CD-ROM is compatible with every standard audio CD player, PC (Windows 95, 98 ME) and Macintosh (OS 8.6 - X Classic) computer.

In about 2 weeks, I will be visiting FANNING ISLAND in the Pacific. I will see the people who made this CD possible, live performing these songs. I cannot wait. Having heard this awesome music before my trip has been just marvelous. I know when I return home to Florida, that having this CD will allow me to relive and recall PARADISE again and again. Thank you so much. Belle Kurz

I have been very lucky recently to have met Gerhard Cernek, the producer of this CD. We've worked together recently performing music here in So. California. His production of the Fanning Island is good! I would recommend this CD to travelers of the world and to anyone who enjoys learnig more about the pleasures of life lived simple. The video was awesome. The idea behind this CD is in very cool taste. The Fanning Island is a worthwhile CD!

CD would be perfect if it had english translation
author: Amanda Reaub
In June 2002 I got a chance to meet the producer of this CD on Fanning Island, setting up a charity fond and recording more traditional music. I was quite impressed how Mr. Cernek communicated with the natives and explained a school class the recording process. I’m glad to see that this CD is now available to a greater public through “CD-Baby”. The informational part about the island is great, but I wished to find translations to the songs or at least a synopsis for each track. Overall I’m still considering this is a very unique product.
