Album Notes

‘Song For The Sea’ is the follow-up release to Farrell Spence’s well-received debut album ‘A Town Called Hell’, 2007.

On this latest album Spence releases songs that she wrote while living in Ireland in 2009. The songs were workshopped live on stages both in Cork, Ireland and Rome, Italy. It was during the performances in Rome that she was joined by Neapolitan guitarist, Francesco Forni, and found a perfect fit both musically and live that eventually convinced her to record the new songs, and her second album, in Italy.

In August of 2009, Forni and Spence embarked on recording ‘Song For The Sea’ over a five day period in room 501 of Ripa Hotel in Rome. They assembled a portable recording studio in the room with the staff of the hotel even helping to supply them with the power-cords and providing room-service as needed. In choosing to record in a hotel room, Spence and Forni were seeking to create a project with a natural and organic tone, free of over-production and cliché. They wanted to capture the spontaneous moments, the ‘sound of the room’, and provide a level of intimacy for the listener that can only be achieved in recordings like these.

In 2010 the files were brought home to Spence’s home town of Vancouver and were mixed by Simon Kendall (Doug and The Slugs) who also added the delicate piano tracks that give these songs a new sound and a growth from the original tone heard on Spence’s first CD ‘A Town Called Hell’.

‘Song For The Sea’ was released on September 8th, 2011 at Teatro Valle in Rome, Italy.
