Album Notes

Fat Maw Rooney is a Wisconsin based southern funk rock group whose explosive and energetic live shows leave crowds with melted faces and soiled underpants. Their jams have been infecting the midwest for the past year, culminating in the release of their first studio album Horseshoes and Hand Grenades. All five members shine in their own way, creating a collage of raw energy. This dynamic group thrives on their close personal connections between themselves and their audience, being able to transition from fiery, screaming passion to stark, humble a cappella seamlessly. Whether you listen for poetry or musical lyricism, you will not be dissappointed.

Fat Maw Rooney is the best undiscovered band in the world
author: Chris Cluff
Hopefully, this CD is the first of many by Fat Maw Rooney. These guys have more creativity and talent in their little fingers than 99.9% of the bands out there have in their whole bodies. This CD is a great mix of songs that cover most of the many genres that this band can tackle. Long live Fat Maw Rooney!!!!!!

A phenomenal CD
author: Leigh
I've loved the music of Fat Maw Rooney for some time. This CD takes it to a new level. The lyrics are just incredible, and these guys really can tell a story. Each song evokes a strong mood - anger, love, hurt, pride - in a musical way that is beyond compare. My favorite cut from this album varies with my mood. Some days, it's "River Loves Blues." Others, it's "All the Good Friends." But "Battlemound" is great in any mood. This album is just hard to pigeonhole, a very eclectic, great work of art.

Phenomincal debut for this up and coming jamband!
author: SKlams
This CD does a phenominal job capturing the raw energy and talent these guys throw down every show. Unlike a lot of other jambands that have trouble polishing their songs for a studio release, Fat Maw Rooney has it pratically perfected on this release. The jams on "Drank You Out Of My Mind" and "Friends and Foes" are extremely tight, but definitely hint at their ability to pull off powerful jams live. I really think it was a great decision to keep the jams concise on the album, letting people be blown away themselves by their powerful live chemistry. I was a little disappointed that "Shapeshift" didn't hint at probably one of their best live jams, but the song is so solid I hardly even missed it after a couple listens. This album is quite the genre bender, and really difficult to classify... "blues/funk/roots jam rock with some bluegrass/folk influence" (thats a mouthful!). "We Could Be" is real funky fun song, followed by two powerful songs with heavy blues influences "Man Alone" and "Troubled Minds". It's really hard to call anyone song my favorite, as they are all so amazing in their own right. At the moment however, I would have to say "Friends and Foes" is probably my favorite, with awesome layering of percussion and lead guitars, with a groovy catchy bass line. "Drank You Out of My Mind" is probably my favorite live song, and it definitely does not disappoint in its album translation. I love the contrast between the bluegrassy verses and the in your face powerful chorus; it almost reminds me of the excitement and power I felt listening to Pearl Jam's "Corduroy" some 10 years ago. "Minnesota" is another favorite song that's extremely catchy with some great vocal harmony coupled with balls out rocking guitarwork. "Tanglewood" is a great way to open up the CD, exemplifying the fusion of styles Fat Maw Rooney pulls off so smoothly. I'm also really impressed with the layering of the vocals in the acapella number "Battlemound". Really cool how another voice is added each chorus, I'd really recommend listening to this song in your car's surround sound. Great job guys, you've really come along way in the past year from the $1 sampler cds with rough lo-fi recordings... I really hope an official live recording is in the works for the near future. All the best of luck finishing up school, and I know we'll be seeing big headlining tours in the near future!
