Fay Wolf - Blankets
author: Steve Strauss - Sweet Deal Tunes New York
Fay Wolf is an artist who has absorbed and assimilated American popular music, and is shaping it to her own artistic purposes …….. American musical theater, rock-and-roll, R & B, and Art Song as it was practiced and from the 60’s through 2009, and as it is practiced and reshaped today by artists such as Regina Spektor. Fay Wolf is a participant in the continuum of the singer-songwriter tradition exemplified by the great Joni Mitchell, and the achingly sublime Laura Nyro. Do yourselves a favor, people, and get out to see Fay live in a club before it’s too late, and even the cheap seats are too expensive.

Fay Wolf is an artist who has absorbed and assimilated American popular music, and is shaping it to her own artistic purposes …….. 50's, 60's, and 70’s American musical theater, rock-and-roll, R & B, and Art Song as it was practiced and from the 60’s through 2009, and as it is practiced and reshaped today by artists such as Regina Spektor. In early 2008, Fay had honored me with MP3’s of songs in development that would eventually be released on her BLANKETS EP. These songs as they are realized on her latest release comprise a gorgeous record. Every cut on Fay’s EP involves the listener in vignettes and sung narratives that are charged with the recognizable tones and emotions of romantic love in the 21st century. Her voice is lovely and knowing instrument.
The BLANKETS EP does not include Fay’s cover of Your Love by The Outfield (1986). I mention Fay’s cover of this song because it is a stunning example of her understanding of rock-n-roll, and the possibilities that exist in a song like Your Love for a stylistic interpretation that seems to be the opposite of rock-and-roll. Fay’s arrangement, phrasing and piano technique in covering this tune maintain the original recording’s danceable meter while infusing the tune with the emotion and the feel of a personal ballad. Maybe this cover will be included in Fay’s LP.
When you see Fay perform solo, you have to remind yourself that it’s just Fay Wolf, singing at the piano. (No drums, nothin’ else but Fay.) Do yourselves a favor, people, and get out to see Fay live in a club before it’s too late, and even the cheap seats are too expensive.
Ah, the extraordinary Fay Wolf. Maybe she’ll come back to New York and play soon, and we’ll get to see her again.
(And, oh yeah, LA, please be reminded, Fay Wolf is a New York girl, and always will be.)

A Gem. Such heartfelt music. Really connected with all of the songs on the EP. She's definitely someone to follow. Would love to hear her duet with some folks on a full album release...whenever that comes... Soon, I hope.
