FDTV... cult classic in the making.
author: RadCompany.net
FD bought a shi**y digital camera. He wanted to be a filmmaker and he had to do it himself. He enlisted his cousin Man to be his leading man and began scripting small short cuts of exaggerated urban scenes. With no budget to worry about, FD used all his means possible to reinvent the silent movie for his own comedic purposes. Interspersing his flashed-out street style shots with black screened dialogue, he posted them on the internet for all the world to see. Gaining a small cult following on the web, FD then decided to compile all his shorts and produced his own DVD collection of his body of work, entitled "FDTV: Volume 1". These shorts range from the dark street comedy PSA of "Cwakhed", featuring Man getting the raw end of a drug deal, to "Roach" which chronicles the nightmarish rampage of a roach out for revenge. What really sets the mood for all of these shorts is FD's amazing soundtracking which always kickstarts the comedy before the stories start supplying their own laughs. The "Roach" short gets Thuroughgood's "Bad to the Bone" treatment while another shows a thug working out to "Move This" by Technotronic. In "Infiltrate", a sword battle between a ganga drug lord and a foiled burglar breaks out to the tune of the Mortal Kombat techno soundtrack. And the songs are always digitally bass overdriven and distorted just how I like it. A rhythm is established by FD's meticulously titled intros and end logo stills to keep the comic timing on point. The crudy digital photography in some of the movies is the real gem of this production. These stills should be printed and hung in a gallery because they come to life and beat the sh*t out of most of the photography littering the halls of PS1. FD's novice, "heart full of napalm" enthusiasm borders on blind genius. Did I mention FD is from Brooklyn? He directed his motley street crew in the cars of subway trains, on the streets in his hood, and in the vacant halls of an under construction court house. All this with practically no money. While all the hipsters in Brooklyn can barely put together their own wardrobe, one man got off his ass and built his own self-produced movie anthology starting with a camera that most photographers would sneer at. A true cinematic soldier.
