notes
The heart, said author Carson McCullers, is a lonely hunter. Catherine Feeny's songs take you on a pilgrimage for those prizes -- love, peace, resolution -- that keep us hunting. She somehow sings the struggle between wish and fulfillment.
Blending folk, country, pop and blues influences, Feeny inspires many comparisons -- Suzanne Vega, Rickie Lee Jones, Cat Power to name a few -- but her music stands on its own. Intimate landscapes, painted with a voice that is alternately earthy and delicate, mark her self-titled debut.
Feeny grew up on the East Coast, listening to her parents' records. Simon and Garfunkle and Cat Stevens were early favorites. She sang as a child, and eventually picked up her dad's old guitar so she could strum along.
"I never understood how someone could come up with an original tune," she says. But amid scale exercises and cover songs, she found her first melody. "I don't remember my first song," Feeny says. "But I remember the process of creating it. I loved it."
Feeny played in her native Philadelphia, with bands and as a solo artist. After a stint in Washington, D.C., she moved to Los Angeles, where she began pursuing a music career in earnest. She plays in L.A. and abroad.

I had the oppotunity to meet Catherine while she was dating an old friend of mine and I also got to see her in concert in very small venues. I want to say that her writing and her rawness drive this album. Her voice fits perfectly to the songs.
every song is awesome
author: alkrispectacular voice, smooth - easy, natural perfection. lyrics are poetic and moving. this is one of those rare gems where you love each and every song on the album. fans (like me) of artists like rosie thomas, nina nastasia, trespassers williams, rachael yamagata, kathleen edwards simply must get this CD!
a beautiful, natural introduction to a great talent
author: Sebastian RogersI come back to this album constantly. In my opinion, there is no contemporary female singer songwriter with a more beautiful voice or a greater potential to be a lasting and important artist. Catherine Feeny is the real thing. Some of the songs on this album will stay with me forever.
Rich, soulful, compelling and sweet.
author: Eddie Moffett -- God’s of MusicRich, soulful, compelling and sweet -- the warmth of the melodies in Catherine Feeny’s debut, self-titled release dance behind the words that define some of our darkest, but most beautiful and familiar moments. An ethereal and airy quality runs through each song; carried by soft harmonies, lightly played piano and Catherine’s angelic voice. The production efforts and musical accompaniment of Joe Purdy allow the choruses of songs like Maggie and Unsteady Ground to build at precisely the right moment -- raising goose bumps with the support of slide guitar and male backing vocals -- while Mr. Blue, has all the melodic perfection of a McCartney tune, built-out with harmonica and mandolin. Fans of inspired folk music are sure to fall in love with Feeny’s lyrics and emotive melodies.

A hauntingly beautiful expression of strength and longing
author: William Beard w/ FlavorpillA heart-warmingly sweet lullaby that soothes the soul and stirs yearning in the heart. Catherine's haunting voice comes from an honest, personal space. The album ranges from sultry blues 'beltloops & bluejeans' to ringing out passionate dark protest on 'Unsteady Ground'. This album becomes a personal treasure, speaking to the courage we all earn in the face of life's bittersweet desire for love.
