Album Notes

"Listening to Carter perform is like sipping a perfectly prepared martini. She's smooth and crisp with an unexpected kick." - Joe Sugarman, Style Magazine

Originally from Washington D.C., Ms. Carter’s first recording of a standard took place in 2000, on the title track of Victor Dvoskin’s release “There’s a Small Hotel”. In 2001, she was featured on New Legacy Jazz Band's CD “5 Months, 2 Weeks, 2 Days”. That same year, her self-produced debut CD, “In the Pink and Songs in Blue” was released, with a sold-out show at the King of France Tavern in Annapolis, MD.

In 2002, Felicia wrote and performed “Great American Songwriters”, a program celebrating over 20 composers’ and lyricists’ contributions to the songbook of jazz. Enticed back to the theatre world in 2003, Carter was composer and lyricist for “Dipteracon”, a musical adaptation of Sartre's play "The Flies", which premiered at LaMaMa, Etc. in Manhattan. The following year she paid homage to over 17 entertainers in anecdotes, quotes, and song, with another tribute entitled “Great American Performers”. In 2005, the Unified Jazz Ensemble featured Ms. Carter on their CD, "Live at 49 West" - an unplanned, serendipitous recording that stemmed from a magical night of music.

Ms. Carter's past performance venues include An Die Musik Live!, The Blue Bar, Carmichael Auditorium, The Gildenhorn/Speisman Center for the Arts, Princeton’s Jazzfeast, The Prince Theatre, and The Top of the Hub.

"Don't sprain the brain trying to figure out how such a big, ballsy voice explodes out of such a petite frame. Just be glad you're getting the chance to hear Felicia Carter sing..." - Bret McCabe, Baltimore City Paper

Loved the standards and was especially pleased with her efforts on the Brazilian selections. Her Portuguese was adequate but fantastic styling was her own.

Carter's voice is full of velvet emotion, satisfying as 12-year-old scotch.

Felicia Carter gave me an intimate introduction to these world-famous artists and songs. I can honestly say that I went from not thinking one way or the other about them to really loving each song. Her voice is playful in "Pennies from Heaven" and grieving in "Everything Happens to Me," soft as velvet one moment and pure as a clarion call the next. Listening to this CD is like nursing a 12-year-old scotch by the fire: comfy, sexy, satisfying.
