notes

Fertile Ground emerged as a quartet in Baltimore during the spring of 1997. The band was founded and is lead by Keyboardist/Song writer James Collins. Coupled with the phenomenal voice of Navasha Daya and rhythmic stylings of drummer Marcus Asante, the band created a versatile sound, which has become their unique signature.

In 1998 Fertile Ground released their debut album "Field Songs" through Collins' independent Label Blackout Studios. The recording was an instant classic on the Jazz/Soul Market. The album featured beautiful ballads like "Ghetto Butterflies" and strong rhythmic progressions like "Sentimental Groove." The album opened the East Coast Market and created an immediate underground following.

Little over a year later, Fertile Ground returned to the Studio and released an even greater album "Spiritual War." Fertile Ground became a sextet, adding world renowned Ekendra Das on percussion and two very established jazz musicians Fred Dunn (Trumpet) and Craig Alston (Tenor Saxophone). "Spiritual War" was the release that propelled the band into the millennium. The Album's lyrics speak to every issue from love to today's societal problems in a musical context that spans through Soul, Latin, Jazz and Reggae. Performing regularly at packed clubs around the US, the band consistently gained prestige and popularity. "Spiritual War" was eventually licensed by UK record label Counterpoint Records and gained instant success on oversea soul/jazz charts. Now, after selling more than 70,000 records independently, Fertile Ground has released yet a third independent album, "Seasons Change."

In support of the album, Blackout Studios launched a 30 date international tour. Dates for the tour included London, Japan, New York, Washington DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Spain, Amsterdam, and Baltimore. The album is Fertile Ground's most popular album and is may very well be one of the best soul/jazz albums released this year.

Fertile Ground is definitely putting real music out here! They have a cool, mellow, jazzy-r&b style that helps me to unwind at the end of the day, yet it's uplifting enough to get me going on those rough Monday mornings when Saturday seems so far away. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Don't wait...get this cd today before it's sold out!!

'Take Me Higher' is one of the most sensual songs I've ever heard in my life! Fertile Ground breathes new life into an arena of otherwise stagnant music.

  • Wow!!!!!
    author: zycor368@hotmail.com

This is what Soul2Soul would've been if they had staying power. I love the soul ("neo" and otherwise), African rhythms, jazz, and mellow funk grooves Fertile Gound displays on this album. I first heard "Take Me Higher" on a compilation album and fell in love with it. Later, I bought this CD and all the other tracks are beautifully produced and high-quality. This is one of those albums I can listen to again and again. There are no weak or "throwaway" tracks here. To Navasha Daya and the group, I say keep on bringing the love and the quality...both are immensely appreciated.

  • Beautiful neo soul!

Ever waited for something all your life and didn't know it until you found it? I'll be!! Finding this cd is like giving your cd collection a well needed boost of adrenaline. Like most great "finds", for me this one came by chance. While listening to satellite radio in a friend's car and flipping thru the channels, the DJ played "Take Me Higher" and I was hooked instantly. Navasha Daya blows! Her voice is so beautiful and powerful she reminds you of all the great chanteuses of our generation. If you can vibe to Maysa Leak, Goapele, Jill or Erykah then Navasha will fit just fine. As a dj, I am moved by beats so when vocals grab my ear that is a testament within itself. How deep is this for a verse-"I can't be alone with you because alone is everything that came before you" ? That is taken from the track "i Remember You". All in all this cd is just fantastic! If you appreciate anything soulful, powerful, and moving then this is the one to get. As Goapele reminded us on her latest album, every day should take us closer to our dreams. Get this cd and I rest assured you'll almost be there. DJ Come of Age

  • Fertile Ground is Da' Bomb
    author: Denise

Fertile Ground is the bomb. I can listen to this CD all day long. It has the soothing melodies that can lay me to sleep and the soulful vibe to wake me up in the morning. They have the soul, the lyrics, and the music. They are the whole package.

  • This is truly great music untainted by commercialism
    author: Kafele

I have to say, the music on this CD is timeless. It stays in heavy rotation in my personal collection. The message in most of the songs is powerful, and the music is orchestrated very well. This is definitley a good buy.

  • I really, truly enjoyed listening to the samples.
    author: Donna R. Sampay

I really, truly enjoyed listening to the samples on this CD. I am in agreeance with all the other reviews that this CD is one of the music industries best kept secret. I think that some radio station needs to get a hold of this CD and give it some airplay. I enjoy the whole Neo-Soul, Jazz, R and B, Funk, African vibe.

  • Fertile Ground Is So Talented They Might Make 8 Tracks Come Back!
    author: Rondonna

What can I say about Fertile Ground????? Let me start by saying I have all 3 of their CD's and I can't go one day without listening to something on either 3. I grew up on good music and they are in a class by theirselves. They are my favorite group right now. If you haven't had an opportunity to see them in person, you dont know what you are missing. One of my favorite cuts, Is Culture Bandits and Illumination. Whenever I have get togethers and they hear this CD played, everyone wants to know, who is that??? It's Fertile Ground the BADDEST BAND IN THE LAND! Purchase this CD you will not be disappointed!

  • Simply the most impressive R/B Soul Group in existence
author: Tony Anderson President of www.vizionaryproductions.com/ Produce

There are some things in life that are simply puzzling. One of which being the fact that Fertile Ground, potentially the most talented group in the history of soul music, is currently not signed to a major record label or has nailed down a major distirbution. Once again this is proof positive that the major record labels do not have a clue what they are doing, or probably more accurate, they know exactly what they are doing and do not want to highlight and expose positive, and spiritually based music. ALl the best to you all from your friends at Vizionary Productions. You all are extreemly talented!!!! I wish you much success!!!

  • I love this cd. One of the best I've heard.
    author: Jonas White

One of my friends recommended this group to me because he knew my style of music and I must admit, the group and the cd was better than I could have ever imagined. I plan on ordering the other cd's so that my collection will be complete and I'll highly recommend it to others. I hope that I'll get the opportunity to see them live down in Florida someday.

Fertile Ground - Seasons Change has too be the music industries best kept secret. Thanx to Albert Pride of the JazzNation.com I'm now familiar with the definitive, inspiring, soulful, jazzy sounds that are absolutely to hip for radio (not really, radio could use a dose of this group). Thanx for this bands unqiue approach to assemble a delicious array of music that will last a lifetime in my household ...
