The Tough Get Going...
Holly Figueroa started playing guitar in July 1999, when her guitar player broke his hip while pitching the tent before their first ever festival show...in front of ten thousand people. She learned three chords in three days and finished her tour by herself. In her first year solo on the acoustic music circuit, she was wowing national audiences in listening rooms from The Bitter End in New York City, to Club Passim in Boston, to the Tractor Tavern in Seattle and Genghis Cohen in Los Angeles. Seattle-based Figueroa has toured extensively throughout the U.S., greeting fans everywhere with her refreshingly bluesy/alt-country sound, usually with her seven year old daughter in tow.
With the release of Figueroa's new recording "How It Is" on Cake Records, Holly is hitting the road again, with nearly 200 stops planned for the next year. With an extensive mailing list and grassroots organized fanbase, Figueroa was able to fund the recording of "How It Is" solely through pre-orders from fans. A uniquely American album that stands tall at the intersection between pop and folk, blues and country, Los Angeles Entertainment Today proclaims: "'How It Is' slays just about any big company songster product that has been coughed up over the past 12 months."
Produced and recorded by red-hot hitmakers The A-Team at Spectre Studios in Seattle, WA, "How It Is" is graced by bassist Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon) and drummer Jerry Marotta (Indigo Girls) , Danny Barnes, Dan Tyack, Sean Halley, and Skip Peri. Figueroa attacks each song with a calm determination that showcases her songwriting prowess, prompting Bill Fisher of The Victory Review to describe the album as "a deeply-felt and mature exploration of grief that builds above all upon the rich, flexible vocal instrument that Holly's voice has become". "How It Is" is the follow up to last years "Dream in Red", which received rave reviews from press all over the country.
Figueroa is the founder of Indiegrrl (a 1500 member international organization for women in the independent music industry). She recently signed with Hacate Entertainment Group in New York, a licensing/publishing company, and has since had music licensed to Oxygen Media, MTV, and the WB Network.

Honesty, fear, fragility, sadness, anger, and many more emotions are captured through this artists songwriting. The musicianship is wonderful and it is obvious that each person knew where their musicial part belonged. ...near perfect!
Poignant, Heart-Aching, Intelligent, Beautiful: Holly
author: Robert Peate, NLPhotos.ComIf I had to sum Holly Figueroa's music up with one word, it would be "poignant". Holly's life has included great sorrow and great joy, and her music reflects this, with honesty and awareness. She shares her soul's good and bad, in a way with which we can all identify. Holly has said far more in her musical life than most "ordinary" persons do in a lifetime, and if you like intelligent yet beautiful music, you owe it to yourself to buy this, my favorite of her albums. Of course, I haven't heard her new one yet!

author: Collected SoundsHolly's voice is crystal clear, gutsy and strong and sounds great singing this genre. I can only imagine what she sounds like live and I'd love to be there in person. This is a Class A recording.

With the flair of Country, the warmth of Shawn Colvin, the melodic genius of Indigo Girls and sweetness of Jonatha Brooke, this is a countrified folk pop album that will lasso together fans of the gritty along with those who prefer sweet poignancy. When you grab for this one, hold on tight as this woman knows how to pick you up off the ground and send you through the atmosphere. Highly Recommended.
WOOOOOO HOOOOOO!!!! I'll never need another cd again.
author: Jack MearseI mean it - this is it for me. I will never purchase another cd. I'm just going to listen to this one over and over and over. I've already listened to it a lot and I'm going to just keep on doing that. Listening over and over and over. I've almost memorized every song. Even if she puts out another cd I won't buy it. Just this one. I'm done - stick a fork in me and blow out the candles. This party is just beginning.

Fantastic
author: MichelleShe's got a beautiful voice, great guitar playing and poetic lyrics. It's got a cool folk/country/blues thing going on but is still totally modern. I'm gonna buy her other albums now!

It's like the Alanis Morrisette’s acoustic album she never have done
author: Pär WinbergThe world is filled with female singer songwriters for the moment. The success for Sarah McLachlan, Shelby Lynne, Beth Orton and you know the rest have opened up for tons of nice artists, and here is another sing songwriter girl to sure check out. This is a very beautiful piece of CD with a touch of both midwestern pop and even on some tunes. Listen to second out “Hold On (Gabriel)” a tune that Shawn Colvin couldn’t have done better and there are plenty more on here in the same calibre, like the softer “No One Can” which cold have been a ballad on Alanis Morrisette’s acoustic album she never have done, and “Scary” with almost a progressive acoustic edge which have the explanation when I see the musicians that are playing on the album. Cool progheads like Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta. Cool for sure. Check her up folks.
