notes
Paul Filipowicz, a throw-back bluesman who never in his 30+ years has bent to music industrys fads or whims.
Blues guitar "Thats it, Thats all there is, Electric, melting tubes, thats the shit". "NAIROBI ROOM" has it all.
MAY 31, 2002 LIVING BLUES POLE
#25 MIDNIGHT AT THE NAIROBI ROOM
This Bio. will be updated in full shortly.
"BLUESMAN" PAUL FILIPOWICZ has been lighting up stages from Texas to Mississippi, California, Colorado and all throughout the Midwest for over three decades.
*His dynamic performances and finger picked guitar style, which give him his unique phrasing and tone, have warranted him critical acclaim in publications as 'Living Blues'...rough-voiced holler and raw roadhouse sound that fit Filipowicz well(LB Jan/Feb 97), 'Blues Access'...loud raucous Texas blues with often wry lyrics(BA Winter 97), 'Blues Revue', 'Big City Blues' and many European publications 'The Jefferson', Scandinavia, 'Blues News', Latvia, and 'Soul Bag'.
**Andy Grigg of ' Real Blues' Victoria B.C. picked him in the top 20 Texas Blues new releases two years in a row with his last CD "What Have You Done For Me Lately" GM1007 checking in at #7 (Texas blues new releases) just behind "Lone Star Shootout" which features the guitar trio Lonnie Brooks, Long John Hunter, Philip Walker (Real Blues #23 2000). That's what you call stiff competition.
*** In the latest,'Concerto' Vienna, Austria (12/01) he received a two page layout, translates down to ...this is one of the few original white blues men around and deserves closer attention.
Over the years he has traveled with and supported up to a seven piece combo.
Even after 30 years of performing his live shows are still always sweat soaked, impassioned true blues-guitar workouts. This Man has earned his reupation the old fashioned way, "You know your're a blues man and I know you're a blues man and every time you take the stage you got to prove IT." Luther Allison, The Night the Lights Went Out at O'Cays Corral, a history of WI Blues.

HIGH OCTANE
author: Big Al's Rhythm RoundUP PBS 106.7 FM...high octane, paint pealing, hot sweaty bar-room blues from guitar country. The title cut is a classic in the making.
Who is that!? It's GREAT!
author: Luke, The Commander, Cadillac Blues 91.3 FM WLVRI played MOST DOGS (first time for any tracks) tonight. A minute into the song, the phone's ringing. Caller wants to know Who is that!? Its GREAT!
Lives up to its evocative promise!!!
author: Blues RevueMidnight at the Nairobi Room..Lives up to its evocative promise as its unhealthy stray-cat walk suggests garage noir or a tribute to the great Johnny Thunders.
Master of controlled blues guitar.
author: Steven Sharp LIVING BLUES MAGAZINEPaul Filipowicz has been laying his soul bare for audiences in Texas and the Upper Midwest for over three decades. His mastery of controlled blues guitar tension over hypnotic rhythms puts him in a class with the best Modern Mississippi Hill Country artists.
- author: Downbeat, June 2002
This Midwestern purveyor of blues-rock has an elemental vitality to his playing that's lacking in many better-known guitar slingers.
Paul is a Bad, Bad man!
author: Jim CongdonMean and Lowdown - not for the faint of heart - raw and stinging and as real as a 90 degree day in August around here. You can tell he has paid his dues, unlike some flah in the pan imitators ;> You ever see a one-legged roofer crawl?
Focused, fiery and cpmfortable.
author: Tom Laskin, Isthmus, Madison WINairobi...Filipowicz sounds focused, fiery and comfortable. He uses his hardcore Chicago guitar sounds and husky, timewarn voice to excellent effect. His band is supportive without being intrusive, a muscular ensemble sound as opposed to the dialed-in boogie that's the bane of post classic blues acts!
I like it verrrry much.
author: LERIC MUSIC...your sound is kickin/full--your writing is good and to the point. I like it verrrry much! Keep on pushin. Jimmy Dawkins
