Raleigh, NC

Like many, I had no idea who The Fire Flies were. A few weeks ago while self-administering one of my frequent doses of college football via the television, a subtle, yet overpowering jingle caught my whimsy. After seeing the Time-Warner Cable commercial here in Raleigh a number of times, I was compelled to scratch the itch. I Googled what I could recall of the “More Than This” lyrics and after a few minutes of intense scouring, Eureka! After sampling the songs individually thru CD Baby, I ordered it. I found “Baobabs in the Basement” to be a refreshing blend of eclectic sounds and harmonic fusion. With each song, you can sense the individual musician’s desires for divergence, yet are drawn back to the beautifully omnipotent congruence of the album’s complex themes. Whether planned or not, (perhaps band members Dan, Will, Seth, and Matt may shed some better light on their intuitions), this album is solid. My favorite song on this album (far and away), is “The Takeoff”. After a comforting, subdued, melodic introduction, “The Fire Flies” throttle up the thrusters and let rip the jams, showcasing their previously unbeknownst affinity and greater potential for live music improvisation, while brilliantly paralleling the comprehensive sensations one might experience during such a “Takeoff”. In short, the song fucking rocks.
Though not a musician myself, I consider myself a kindred soul in the relentless plight to preserve the modulated intentions and artistic integrity of musical composition-despite the suffocating dictation spoon fed to us by the “mainstream” record companies. My prediction: with the strides of self promotion, fan blogging, and the continued emergence of artist friendly outlets like CD Baby, musical categorization through genre labeling by the record industry will eventually wane, opening the flood gates for artist individuality, as well as, listener individuality. To the Gentlemen comprising “The Fire Flies”, I salute you on your burgeoning success.
