Album Notes

"It is absolutely your best CD yet! I love it. I love the subtitle "Hymns of Faith played with Celtic Heart." It's most appropriate, and oh, so true -- perfectly describes the contents. Very well done!

I loved "What Wondrous Love!, "Jesus, Lover of My Soul/Musical Priest" and the "invitational" hymn medley ("Just As I Am/I Surrender all"). But for me, the best moment came in the middle of the CD: I was smiling after that particularly sweet rendition of "The Lord's My Shepherd."

"Sweet By and By" started out and I thought, "Oh, this is going to be sweet, too." But then I heard that drum solo and just laughed out loud. You had my toe tapping all the way through. That is an inspired version of "Sweet By And By!"(One of my grandmother's favorites, and I know she'd approve.)"

Crafting arrangements of beloved hymns intertwined with Irish melodies and with an Irish voice grew out of a passion for both traditional Celtic music and the traditional hymns of our faith that have persisted for generations. These are the hymns that our parents whistled and sang as we grew up. Adding Celtic heart and Irish flavor gives them a fresh new sound.

We are grateful for a God whose enduring love is with us through life's sorrows, disappointments, and failures. When our spirits are bruised and broken, God is there to comfort and guide. These great hymns of faith express truth that becomes deeper and richer as we experience life and God's "Unfailing Love."

FireWeed is a traditional Celtic band from Northern Michigan. Band members include Kathy Case (Hammered Dulcimer, Irish Whistle); Ken Case (guitar, Irish Tenor Banjo, Irish Bouzouki); John Harrison (Bodhran, Congas, Percussion); and Mary Harrison (Autoharp). They perform at festivals, concerts, banquets, churches, art shows, weddings and other special events. They also share their music through their recordings. They have recorded four CD's.

Their name "FireWeed" comes from a flower in northern Michigan that grows in the wild. It is one of the first plants to grow back after the devastation of a forest fire. It survives because of its deep root. This group sees this as a symbol of their music. The tunes they perform have a deep root in tradition that has allowed them to survive and thrive through generations.

REVIEWS

Could use improvement, but still very good and beautiful.

Overall, FireWeed has impressed me with this new addition to their recordings. This CD shows a growing in the technicality of the band and its members. It is interesting to note the increased use of the Irish whistles, and the disappointing noticeable absence of FireWeed's trademark fiddle. However, even so, "Unfailing Love" resounds with more creativity from the Celtic band. A few notes: The transition from "Dawning of the Day" to "Morning Has Broken" is a bit rough and throws the piece off a bit. However, it is redeemed once you get into it some more. "Jesus Lover of My Soul" is a great tune, but I think the sound quality could be adjusted somewhat. It just sounded more brash and less deep than the song requires. Also, the ending lacked the type of finality it needed. Also of note is that the CD quality is more unrefined than most CDs, but it gives a more “live” feel to it that some people may find desirable. "Are You Washed" seems to be less polished than the rest of the tunes. Great thought on the song, but I think it could have stood to be refined a little more before recording it. Kathy’s whistle is coming along nicely. Her tone is pure and soothing. The transition on "I Need Thee Every Hour/More Love to Thee, O Christ" is rough. It would have been nice to hear just “I Need Thee Every Hour” by itself. That tune was gorgeous and the second tune just seemed to take away from it. Track 17 was beautiful. Kathy’s dulcimer-skills rang true to their full color here. The band's growth, again, is noticeable. The technicality of this CD is the most complex I have seen come out of this group. Yes, there are improvements that could be made on the next CD, but the thought and dedication to God behind this recording make it worth listening to.
