Embracing a rugged country-folk style described by one listener as "all spit and no polish," the Flanks write and perform songs that are deliberately rough around the edges, drawing on influences as earthy as 80-year-old jug band music...

"Rollicking!" —The New Yorker
"The Flanks just blew my mind. They play this old-timey, country-folk music complete with guitars, harmonica, fiddle, upright bass, and some of the most beautifully sung harmonies I've ever heard . . . One of the most wonderful shows I've ever seen."
—Brooklyn Vegan
"Nice job. They should turn you up louder."
—Tommy Ramone
"First-rate Americana."
—Leicester Bangs
Based in Brooklyn, New York, the Flanks have been playing in venues all over the New York City area and beyond since 2002. Mainstays of the Brooklyn Country Music scene, in the last couple of years we've appeared in a nationally televised commercial for Sylvania lightbulbs and played a gig in front of thousands at a NASCAR race. In New York we've shared the bill with roots music favorites such as the Hackensaw Boys and held residencies at Pete's Candy Store and Galapagos Arts Space. Our music has been heard on numerous radio stations, including WFMU, which Rolling Stone magazine has named as the best radio station in the United States.
Members of the Flanks first met in Brooklyn, arriving there from Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New Hampshire, California, and exit 9 of the New Jersey Turnpike. Our barroom-friendly, original, lyric-driven music draws on old-time, jug band, pre-war blues, bluegrass, honky-tonk, and outlaw styles, as well as rock influences like The Band and Little Feat.
Driven by full harmonies and rough around every edge, the thoroughly live sound of the Flanks—dubbed by some as "dirty country"—has won widespread admiration for the group among audiences all over the East Coast.
