Album Notes

Coming from a town better known for Ohio's oldest fair and not too mention all the corn and cattle that graze the fields surrounding the area, four young men have found a common bound that brings them together like no other, music. The town is Barlow OH, and the music scene, well quite frankly, there isn't one. But that hasn't kept these four young men from doing what they love most, making fun-fast catchy tunes.

It was in the middle of October 2000, when singer/guitarist Nathan Evans (23) received a phone call from Ohio University. It was bassist Adam Wellspring (19), drummer Sam Lee (19), and guitarist/singer Jeff Dutton (19). While attending OU, the three had been asked to play at a Halloween Party that coming weekend, and they wanted to know if Nathan would join them. Nathan, a high school math teacher, had played in a cover/punk band with Sam for the past 2 years, but their band had broken up when everyone left for college. Jeff and Adam too had played in a band with Sam, but things had kind of been put on hold. So without any hesitation Nathan said yes. The four met in the basement of Nathan's house and Flinch was born.

Playing all covers at their first gig, the four had a uniqueness about them. Each and every individual of the band had been influenced by a wide variety of musical styles such as punk, heavy metal, emo, and yes, even some country. After the first show, the four band-mates knew they had found something special. Things seemed to click and most importantly they had fun playing together.

In the months that followed, Flinch started to practice more and more. They were starting to play some shows at local colleges, and the response they were receiving was getting greater and greater. As the months continued, Flinch began to work on original material. They would throw ideas at each other and finally songs began to pour out. The process was slow at first, but once those first couple of songs were finished the creativeness began to increase, and their songs began to get better and better.

With such a wide variety of musical influences, one may think that coming up with original material may be hard, but with these four fun-loving guys from Barlow the answer is simple. Make it catchy, make it fun, but most importantly keep it simple. And that is just what they did.

With Sam, Adam, and Jeff in college, and Nathan being a teacher, the four decided to use the 2001 summer to record their first cd. Although money was tight, they scraped up enough money and recorded the fourteen song album in two days calling it Changes.

Even though the band Flinch has only been together for a year, the four guys from Barlow OH, have used that time to not only grow as musicians, but most importantly grow as friends. Its hard to say what makes this band unique, maybe it's the fact that they have a teacher who tries to guide them, or maybe it's the fact that they are each different in their own way. But one thing is for sure, these guys love their fans, they love each other, and most importantly, they love their music.

Nice Guys

One of the guys in the group gave me this cd when we played with them in West Virginia. They had played a pretty damn good set so I was pretty stoked to listen to the album. Cut to two year later and for some reason I never listened to it. I'm lazy and forgetful and I misplace everything. Anyhow, my point is I finally find the album accidently and I pop it in the stereo and I'm brought back to that day in Parkersburg, WV and it puts a smile on my face. Great pop/punk album. I'm glad my path crossed theirs on that night.

A power pop/punk record through and through. Every song rocks. Modern rock/punk with awesome instrumentals and creative singing. You won't get this music out of your mind. Often rightly compared to Green Day and Blink 182. These boys may be young, but they have cornered the market on punky pop, pop, pop!
