Album Notes

“From farther up the east coast toward Christchurch comes Flip Grater. The female singer-songwriter has a Hope Sandoval feel to her acousto-folk, but when she shades to something more angsty indie, she's got a little Cat Power in her.” – The Austin Chronicle, Austin, Texas

"Saturday night at the Dux de Lux, acoustic songstress Flip Grater treated the punters to four new songs, freshly inspired from her trip to the SXSW festival in Texas. Her lyrics, deeply pensive, and her voice, that rises like a clear spring and shifts seamlessly into smoky shades of blue in a nuance of moods, made her performance utterly captivating." - THE BEAT, Christchurch Press, New Zealand

“Able to generate tones of reflective melancholy with genuine poetic authority, Flip’s acoustic folk vividly project her audience through the emotions of which she sings. By juxtaposing themes of strength with other more downcast dispositions she instills her songs with exceptional passion, whilst still remaining adeptly restrained.” - The Package, New Zealand

Based in Christchurch, New Zealand, singer/songwriter Flip Grater is an ascending talent in New Zealand music with intelligent self penned songs and a versatile honey -coated voice. Flip's style ranges from dirty indie-folk, to gentle introverted lullabies. She has just signed a deal with Native Tongue Music Publishing and will release her first album, Cage for a Song, on Maiden Records in 2006.

Flip has been performing since 2003 and has shared the stage with international artists Ben Lee, The Shins, Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3 and Gina Villalobos as well as New Zealand's premiere artists Anika Moa, The Phoenix Foundation, SJD, Lucid 3, Gramsci, Autozamm, and James and Donald Reid.

She has traveled twice to the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, performing at the festival and live to air on KUT FM and KLBJ FM.

I also found her by accident. Wow. She plays the title track on the NZ zombie film, "Last of the Living". By itself, her song is slow & soulful; combined with the film, its erie & tense. And slow. And soulful. Check out her videos on YouTube. Good stuff.

In my view Flip has produced a 'modern day classic' of vibrant, mournful and angry songs which belies her tender years.Brilliant !!!!!!

this is great!. i found her/them by accident - but what a good one! this debut(?)-record could be located somewhere between Cat Power and PJ Harvey - if you need a classification. great songs, some with some kind of angry undertone, some softer. electric or acoustic guitar, sometimes some drums and some piano, an overall sparly but cool instrumentated work. 5 stars from me!

An alternately gritty and pretty run at blurring the borders between folk and rock, Flip Grater's "Cage for a Song" travels nearly halfway across the globe to land its pillowy lo-fi in the United States. While she's a native of New Zealand and an alum of SXSW, there's something intimate about these songs that transcends location; it's ethereal without being too spacey, it's powerful without being overpowering, sparse without being vacant. The record has a universal immediacy to it. Fans of Cat Power, Mazzy Star, and PJ Harvey will find a home with Flip.
