THE STORY SO FAR…

Dave grew up in South Shields, an idyllic village in the North East of England, but now resides in the South West where he teaches piano and records his music when he gets a moment’s peace.

During the 1990s, Dave focussed on composing contemporary classical music for the concert hall and had several of his works performed live across the UK (and as far away as Taiwan) by renowned performers such as the Kokoro Ensemble, Gemini and pianist James Clapperton.
Along the way, Dave also completed a PhD in Musical Composition in the summer of 2000.

Meanwhile, from 1989 to 2002, Dave composed and performed jingle idents for BBC Radio’s “Steve Wright In The Afternoon”. After a couple of years absence, a selection of these were aired again on a daily basis throughout 2006.

WHAT’S FLOWERBED?

Dave returned to songwriting a few years ago and recorded two EPs under the pseudonym Flowerbed.
Along with an instrumental album entitled “Still”, these two EPs are now rare and collectable. However, the six songs featured were later joined by a further five in 2004 to comprise a full-length CD album called “Songbook”.
The songs themselves could be described as “singer-songwriter”, “delicate, laidback, melodic music” and “revealing influences from Joni Mitchell to XTC”.

A selection of six songs from “Songbook” are now downloadable as mp3s on the Flowerbed site’s homepage while, for afficionados of CD quality out there, all the tracks on the album are available to buy here at http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/flowerbed!!!

  • Musical. Lyrical. Essential.
    author: Steve Watts

I have put off reviewing this album for months and months (and months). I have eventually realised that my reason for doing so is that I simply have neither the vocabulary nor the eloquence to express my admiration for, and love of it. The musical composition and arrangement of the songs is superb, combined with beautiful guitar work and... well... 'indescribable' close harmony vocals. I see works of this type not as entertainment, but as a carrier for the lyrical content within, and the more willing you are to allow the carrier to penetrate your consciousness the more likely you are to hear the message. The songs performed here slip easily past your defences and in them there are words of wisdom for all of us. Don't get me wrong - there is no preaching, but simply an open honesty about things in life that really matter. This is an album to be listened to, not just to be heard. Treat youself to a comfy chair, mood lighting, a glass of fine wine.... and Songbook.

  • "Songbook" doesn't go where you expect. It goes to a place that is far far bette
    author: Julian

juicy harmonies, almost disssonant chord voicings and a melody line that doesn't go where you expect, rather it goes to a place that is far far better! Take one great songwriter / musician, the best of McCartney, Andy Partridge(XTC) and Brian Wilson, a million other references you can't quite place, add a soupcon of noughties irony, give it a damn good shaking and accompany it with sensitively played and arranged mainly acoustic guitar backing, and you are about halfway there! This album needs a general release! Thousands of ex shoe-gazers, rockers and generally grown up people would marvel at its inventiveness. Eat your heart out Travis Coldplay etc. Flowerbed reaches the heights you try! Buy it, you won't be dissappointed. I have had to buy several copies for friends!!!

  • Clever !
author: Laura T Lynch of Kweevak.com

Flowerbed is David Sanderson, a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. Sanderson sites a wide range of musical influences from The Beatles, to Joni Mitchell to XTC. His own melodic style is light rock and pop. David's eleven-track, solo CD is guitar and vocal based. Sanderson writes philosophical lyrics about life and travel. His approach to production is laid back with a few strange clips added. 'Travelbag' the opening track moves along on visual storytelling accented by the acoustic guitar. 'In Circles' is universal with the theme of searching for meaning but finding oneself "running round and round in circles". David uses the guitar to create the subtle rhythm in the song. 'Mindful Moon' has dreamy, reflective vocals combined with soft instrumentation bringing the CD to a quiet close. David Sanderson is a clever wordsmith armed with a guitar!

  • Music that takes you somewhere else you would rather be
    author: Elena

What hits you first are the harmonies, but what follows are the unexpected landscapes of sound. It is a world unto itself and one which MUST be explored. A brilliant CD!!

  • Exquisite - An oasis
    author: James

A collection of delightful songs by a master of composition. This CD is definitely a must have. The more you listen to it the more you'll hear.
