Album Notes

Flying Venus moves into the realm of “heavy americana” with bigger guitars, driving drums, funky keyboards and expressive vocals. Their third release, “Face of a Nation,” is a departure from Jean Mazzei’s previously poppy point of view. “I guess I just needed to talk about how I see America today. My intention is not to finger-point, but to observe and question.” From “We All Fall Down,” a song which is a twisted perspective of looking at street life through a funhouse mirror, moving on to high school love in “Kinda Life U,” to the plight of the lonely in “Long Road to Memphis,” this collection of 14 songs pulls from diverse facets of American life. The songs are about real people, real dreams, and real issues.

Made me think
author: A new Flying Venus fan
A friend of mine bought me this CD because he knows I like 80's-style music, and even though the CD came out in 2006, it did not disappoint. About half of the songs are quite fun, while the other half are thought-provoking and emotionally deep. I especially enjoyed House of Cards, BonBon the Orgasmatron, and I Don't Trust You. Great songwriting and versatile style! I also enjoyed the edgy twist given to the cover tunes (can we say ass-kicking drums!?!) and noticed that the lead vocals on Sweet Dreams were actually done by the backup singer (Dori Petrie). Hauntingly beautiful voice... I think so! Perfect for the darker version of the song and a nice balance with Jean's raspier vocals on the other songs. I also liked the group's sweet but tough female take on Drives Me Crazy. Overall, the CD is intriguing and lends itself to many a listen. All of the musicians on this CD deserve a round of applause!

Loved it!

Not everyone can pull off an album that both carries a message and simultaneously encourages you to have a most excellently good time. "Face of a Nation" by Flying Venus does that: from the title track, which brings up a timely political issue, to "Bonbon the Orgasmatron" which is just plain fun (and my favorite), to the covers of "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)," you'll find plenty to think about and to sing along to.

Hauntingly beatiful, gripping and powerful

This CD grabs you at the first beat and holds on until the very end. Jean's voice is hauntingly beatiful as she takes you on a wild ride through Long Road Back to Memphis to the edgy cover of Sweet Dreams. Definitely a records to be proud to have made and one that makes me proud to own.
