notes

When the four musical minds that make up Chicago's FIRST NAME BASIS (more commonly referred to as FNB) came together in early 2003, they dedicated themselves to creating a sound that would bring the groove back to rock 'n roll - and now hundreds of shows and one full length album later, it seems they are doing just that.
The First Name Basis sound combines a healthy mix of blues based rock & funk with an infectious songwriting style that has earned the band an impressive following in their hometown Chicago and throughout the Midwest. While maintaining a hectic tour schedule throughout the summer of 2003, the band used their minimal off time to record and produce their full length debut CD, "SNAPSHOTS". The albums ultra-funky first single "Nine Lives" received favorable reviews everywhere and helped introduce the band to many new audiences.
The album has since become a huge seller at shows and with online music retailers like CDBABY.com and TowerRecords.com - thanks to the internet new fans from all over the world have discovered the melodic sounds of this fresh and funky quartet. Despite a taste of success with recording, the guys continue to focus on their first passion, live performance. Their wildly energetic full band performances have earned them a reputation for turning any venue into an energy filled dancehall. That reputation combined with the bands dedication to playing "whenever, wherever" seem to be working for First Name Basis.
FNB guitarist Tate best explains the bands feeling that success means having fun doing something you love while not being afraid to work hard and sacrifice -
"Regardless of a venue's size or location, we go all out on every show to play our best, we always give people a high energy performance" - this refreshing passion for spreading the music under any circumstances has worked well for the band. Sticking to a DIY grassroots approach to touring and promotion, FNB turns in one stellar performance after another earning their success one fan at a time.

  • superlatively solid song writing demonstrated on the groups debut CD, Snapshots
    author: Ken Mowery - Creatorsweb.com

FNB is all about having fun and working hard, which is certainly appropriate for a band that delivers what they call, "straight up rockin grooves". But this is fun with a capital "F" because these dudes have put a fantastic act together. Lead guitar player ,Tate Troelstrup, and bassist, James Meador, have a tight and polished interaction that rightly compliments the superlatively solid song writing demonstrated on the groups debut CD, "Snapshots" , which was released late in 2003. "9 Lives", and "Windy City Blues" are notable examples as is "Wheels of Steal". FNB is a touring band that finds avid supporters in the clubs and colleges throughout America's mid-west. There is serious talent here from the writing and arranging to the powerful vocal thrust of front-man Kelley Kauth and the tastefully rhythmic chops of drummer Nick Mitchell. Perhaps the most telling feature of the band is the work ethic that they bring to their art. They are out there making it happen, having fun, building a loyal following of music lovers who are all too happy to patronize this group of musicians who know how to rock. If the future belongs to the proactive then it belongs to First Name Basis. "Snapshots" is available for only $8.00 at CDBaby http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/fnbmusic For that price you should buy several copies and turn your friends on to some awesome and funky rock n roll. Believe me the day is coming when you're going to say, "FNB? Oh yeah, I knew them way back when..." -Ken Mowery-
