Album Notes

For centuries, composers have written dance music. Here is an enjoyable collection that includes a tango, boureé, samba, gigue, habanera, allemande, siciliana, pavane, waltz, and more! Each dance has its own rhythm and character. Some of the music was literally written to be danced to, while other pieces were more inspired by the art and movement of dance.

Michael Fogler, for production of this CD, has received professional development funding through the Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, supported by state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Michael Fogler, based in Lexington, Kentucky, has been a performer of both solo and chamber music for 30 years. In 1978 he became the first guitar faculty at the University of Kentucky, and is presently on the faculty of Georgetown College. Recently, he was selected as a participant in the Kentucky Arts Council’s Performing Arts Directory. His career has included performing with the Lexington Chamber Chorale, playing in the Lexington Guitar Trio, a voice and guitar duo, and now in a duo with flutist, Merrilee Elliott.

Merrilee Elliott enjoys a varied career as a performer and teacher. In addition to her collaboration with guitarist Michael Fogler, she is the second flutist in the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra and the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra in Door County, Wisconsin. She also plays in a duo with harp, a trio with viola and cello, and the Lexington Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet. Merrilee teaches flute at Transylvania University and in her private studio in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Elliott-Fogler Flute & Guitar Duo’s repertoire includes Baroque, French Impressionist works, great contemporary works such as Robert Beaser’s Mountain Songs and Katherine Hoover’s Canyon Echoes, and their own renditions of Lennon and McCartney.

I have listened to this cd several times now and really love it. I think it has many moments of interest and I love the familiar pieces with a different flair and the ones I've never heard before. The quality of playing is superb. At first, the echo of the hall was distracting since I'm used to recordings in closed spaces like a studio. Now I really like it because it brings an "alive" feeling to the music.
