Album Notes

“Here is something most folks don’t get enough of, Argentine tango music especially pieces performed beautifully by East Lansing’s Carmen Maret (flute) and Andrew Bergeron (guitar) who have brought this entertaining/soothing genre as of late to West Michigan’s Mezze Café.”

John Sinkevics, Local Spins CD Reviews, Grand Rapids Press 2005

The Grand Rapids, Michigan based flute and guitar duo, Folias, performs an eclectic mix of music from original compositions, Argentine tango, to modern classical music. Folias’ summer tours in 2004 and 2005 have included performances of their original composition in Michigan, Indiana, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and Idaho as well as tango music for dancers in Madison, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Lincoln, Bozeman, Eugene, and Portland.

Originally from Holland, Michigan Andrew Bergeron splits his creative effort between composition and performance. He received his Master’s degree in composition from Michigan State University, and his Bachelor of Music from Grand Valley State University. Mr. Bergeron has performed solo guitar recitals throughout mid-Michigan before co-founding Folias. Andrew Bergeron is on staff at Grand Rapids Community College where he doubles as a private guitar instructor and head of the Suzuki guitar program.

As a flutist, dancer, and tango scholar, Carmen Maret merges music performance with music ethnography. Ms. Maret received her Mater’s in music at Michigan State University with a focus on ethnomusicology. She produced a Master’s thesis in 2005 that looked at tango in the Michigan Argentine Tango club based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She received her Bachelor of Music in flute performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and her Master of Music in flute performance from Michigan State University.
