Album Notes

Carla is a nationally-renowned singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, a long-time member of the Mother Folkers, and a highly respected recording artist. She plays violin, guitar, piano, recorder, concertina, and several Renaissance and Balkan instruments, and possesses one of the loveliest singing voices around. "One of the most delightful performers around...this seemingly delicate voice carries a surprising range of emotions: haunting, joyful, plaintive, and playful." (Intermountain Acoustic Musician).

Hal Aqua fronts the Jewish world fusion band Los Lantzmun. Hal plays guitar and mandolin and lately has been delving into Middle Eastern stringed instruments (oud, saz, and cumbus), and he can sometimes be found in the company of wacky kids’ performer, Cowboy Hersh.

Miriam Rosenblum, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist and Swallow Hill music teacher, plays with Hal in Los Lantzmun, and pursues her love of both Renaissance and Irish music. She plays recorders, pennywhistles, clarinet, and button accordion.

Together as The Folkaltones, Carla, Hal, and Miriam serve up a musical stew that reflects their varied interests: traditional and contemporary British ballads, Carla's originals, Celtic dances and airs, Beatles songs and country heartbreakers, bringing an eclectic array of genre-bending music.

This CD release their first, through Propinquity Records, an independent label started by Carla in 1982 . Titled Tuning Up, recorded by Denver’s gifted engineer at Rocky Mountain Recorders, Paul Vastola. Songs on the CD include two originals by Carla, whose songwriting has awarded her the status of finalist in the Kerrville, Texas, and honorable mention in the Louisville, Kentucky competitions, as well as a Fellowship in Composition from the Colorado Council on the Arts and Humanities. Also on the CD are songs by Richard Thompson and the duo Lowen and Navarro, and traditional Irish gems, both vocal and intrumental.
