Album Notes

Scholar-producer Bucky Halker has now finished four CDs in the "Folksongs of Illinois" series, offering us an incredible and insightful musical journey through the Prairie State's many and varied folk music traditions. On #4, Halker goes to Chicago in the post-WWII era and listeners will be happy he did. The City of Big Shoulders is a city of migrants and immigrants and here are some great performances from Irish, Chinese, Polish, Columbia, Mexican, American Indian, Puerto Rican, folk revival, and Filipino acts. What a great listen and what a fun musical ride for anyone with broad tastes. And, as with previous volumes, there's an introductory essay and liner notes with tons of information on the music and the acts. A big highlight is "Old Chy-Car-Go, " a Woody Guthrie song about the Windy City which has never been recorded before. Check out this CD and you'll be smiling for sure.

Previous CDs drew rave reviews everywhere. In fact, the project has yet to receive even a mediocre review and has been praised as a model documentary project and one which other states would do well to follow. Volumes 1-3 received heavy airplay on folk and world music programs and stood on the charts for months.

"a wonderful collection" Journal of Western Folklore
