Floating Feather is the debut album of Fox and the Bird, a folk/roots collective of songwriters from Dallas that emerged as central members of the Dallas Family Band, a loose knit collection of indie folk bands that includes the Beaten Sea, lalagray, Jacob Metcalf, Spooky Folk and other acts. With diverse instrumentation and a rotating cast of lead vocalists, Fox and the Bird blends guitar-based compositions with banjo, mandolin, accordion, trumpet, violin, bass, percussion, and layered harmonies to create charming folk music with impressive resonance.
The songs are poetically simple and bursting at the seams with musical complexity, which creates an upbeat, accessible folk offering that leaves fans with no choice but to tap their feet and sing along enthusiastically. Fox and the bird is a small folk orchestra with a chorus of swelling harmonies and alternating melodies.
With home as a central theme to their lyrical catalogue, it’s no wonder the Fox and the Bird first came together in a living room in early 2009. In the early days, the band collaborated with residents of Dallas' famed Annex House, which at the time booked local and traveling musical acts on an almost weekly basis to play high-energy, jam-packed house shows that launched more than a few bands to the forefront of Dallas’ burgeoning music scene. And the Fox and the Bird was no exception.
Floating Feather features several songs each by five songwriters—Dan and Kelsey Bowman, Travis Lawrence, Ray Weyandt, and Wheeler Sparks.
