I decided to record this album three years ago. It took me three months after moving to Chicago to find a studio. I fundraised in three spurts. I put together three bands to feature on this album. And in the end, one day was spent with each band in the studio recording. I spent countless hours afterwards laying down vocal tracks... but the band, the songs; the depth of this album was really created in just three days. I chose the material for the album from a conversation with my father, Marc Johnson, whose musicality is indisputable, and whose opinion I always respect. He told me, "You always sound better doing the music you want to do." And he was right. I am unquestionably a jazz singer, not only through my training but because I love this style of singing. However, I always felt limited by the standard jazz repertoire. The music I listen to on my own is quite often not jazz music. I chose these songs because something about them speaks to me. , and hopefully that comes across when you listen to it. It took a lot of work to get these three days to happen, to get this album to happen... and I can't wait to make my next one.
