Her voice is truly unique. With original songs both personal and universal, Julia Francis' infectious melodies have been described as Fiona Apple meets The Flaming Lips.

Album Notes

Driving rock confessions, country-infused lullabies, and inspirational folk anthems deliver a diverse cast of characters in 'Five Challenges to Flight; the seductress in 'Metropolitan' lives in harmonious contrast with the hopeful child in 'Seal Baby'.

The songs here are lush and warm, supported by strings, piano, Hammond B3, Wurlitzer, guitars, celeste, clarinet, flute, trombone, and of course, the ocean.

Julia Francis' voice will most likely sound familiar to you, but you'll have a hard time thinking of anyone she sounds like: she's an original. Well respected for her live performances, Julia's flirtatious, heartbreaking and bold storytelling is well represented on this, her first of many records.

Cool and good

This CD has a very original sound. "Welcome to Kitty Hawk" is excellently produced, other songs are really great in story-telling. "Ship of Zion" is extremely catchy and beautiful. Took me some time to get used to a sometimes unexpected sound but I love music that opens my mind and widens the focus for good songs. Maybe not a must-have but totally a glad-to-have!
