Album Notes

- ABOUT THE ORANGE CONCERN

Released in November of 2003, "The Orange Concern" is the debut album by the Francis Kim Band.

- ABOUT FRANCIS

Francis began his musical career at the age of four, with Suzuki books in one hand and a quarter-size violin lodged in his chin. At twelve years old, a schoolmate played him a copy of Abbey Road for the first time. He traded four strings for six, formed a band, and has been making beautiful music ever since.

Influenced by artists from the Beatles, the Beautiful South, Elvis Costello, U2, and the Clash to Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and Randy Newman to Wendy Ip, Jacob Bailis, and Noam Weinstein, Francis's music can be described as thoughtful pop or tuneful rock. He has a strong, striking sense of melody, ranging from the simple to the dissonant. His lyrics are intelligent without being pretentious, irreverent without being juvenile, heartfelt without being melodramatic.

Francis was raised in Naperville, IL and currently resides in Boston, MA. He graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Applied Mathematics and a field specialization in Economics in 1999.

- ABOUT THE BAND

Drums - Born and raised in Malaysia, Robin Lai came to the US in1999 to study Music Business, Production, and Engineering at the Berklee College of Music. Robin has studied under Shawn Kelley, Larry Finn, Dave Dicenso, Dave Weigert, and Dave Cowan. He has played in a number of groups including Godam, Floodline (formerly Driven), Forget The Girl, and the Cambridge Community Fellowship Church Gospel Choir. He is an active session drummer and producer.

Bass - Chris Shelton graduated from Berklee in 2000 with a degree in composition. In 2002, he received a Master's degree in Theoretical Studies from New England Conservatory. In earlier lives, Chris has played in the bands Pyrocy, Zipperhead, and Introspection, opening for Ozzy and Alice Cooper.

Lead Guitar - Ever since the age of 13 when he first saw Pete Townshend whirl his arm around like a windmill, Eugene Song has wanted to play guitar in a band. After graduating from Brown University, he came to Boston in the fall of 2002. He wrote and performed his own music for about a year before he met Robin Lai while working at Soundscape Studios. Eugene was introduced to Francis and Chris and soon became the fourth member of The Francis Kim Band.

The World of Five Foot Four
author: Jacob Bailis
"I see the world of five foot four" Francis Kim sings. And that's what this is. There's some sadness there. Some hard hard hearts. But there's a lot of love. And luminescence. And beautiful music.

A MUST-HAVE CD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
author: Lorraine C.
This CD is well worth the money. The songs have a live feel about them, and they're extremely catchy. The genre of the music is hard to describe. It's a hybrid of folk, rock, and pop. You have to listen to the CD again to assimilate yourself into the music. At first, I was confused about the quality of their songs, but after a second listen, I was hooked. After you buy their CD, join the Fook-Busters at www.franciskim.com!

Comfortably familiar, yet with a decidedly fresh musical style
author: Cynthia M.
The Orange Concern is a musical journey into various and enduring musical styles. From the decidedly Costello-ish "Letting Go" to the jazz-inspired "Providence," to the classicly fun "So Sad" to the sweetly simple "Where You Belong," the Francis Kim Band showcases its unexpected and sophisticated interpretations of familiar sounds in a way that makes this CD at once familiar yet fresh. And for the purist, The Orange Concern's all-too-rare melodic complexity is what makes this album one that offers something more each time it's played. A real must-have!

Melodic and clever.
author: Zach P.
If you like intelligent rock music with catchy, sophisticated melodies, "The Orange Concern" is an album you'll cherish. Francis' songwriting remains consistently strong, sometimes edgy, and always clever. The band compliments the songs with tight, sparse arrangements. Check out this CD.
