Album Notes

Having been favorably compared with giants of the folk genre such as Dick Gaughan and Stan Rogers, former Gabriel’s Gate front man Frank Blair releases his first solo project: Evergreen.

Frank was a founding member of three Midwestern bands that forged a unique sound from a Celtic base and applied their myriad influences. Each were favorites at festivals and concert settings through the Midwest and Southwest and known for their driving, powerful arrangements of dance tunes and elegant arrangements of songs, featuring Frank’s vocals. Three of the members, including Frank, were composers, contributing many original pieces to the repertoire.

Now living in the Pacific Northwest, Evergreen is a collection of 12 of Frank’s favorite tracks of vocal and instrumental music drawn from the British Isles folk traditions as well as original compositions in simple, elegant arrangements.

"Besides the obvious references to the Pacific Northwest, where I currently reside and which is mostly green most of the time, there are others that just fit. Those things that are constantly in demand because they are constantly needed are referred to as "evergreen." There is a hint of the insistance of life through the dormancy of winter, most easily seen by the evergreens that keep vigil over the sleeping woodlands. These tracks are my evergreens - I've known most of them for years and years and yet I continually refer to them. Many of these songs are the first places I go when I pick up a guitar or when I'm asked to play something impromptu.

They are my constant, reliable, ever-living friends."

New Fan

My mother and father introduced me to this CD over Christmas time and it brought a lot of cheer to the house. I am a big fan of traditional Irish and folk music. I wish Frank Blair and the Gabriel's Gate group would come play at a few of the local pubs here. They would be more than welcomed to share their ability of song. Sincerely, your New Fan!

Awsome "Giant" of a sound. Not particularly being a fan of celtic traditional melodies.Frank totally captivated me with his "BIG" Martin dreadnaught emmitting a frolicing sound from finger picking limericks to strumming marching ballads.I'm so glad that I stopped at the Gresham Borders store, where Frank was playing a gig.Frank apologized for playing darker sided Folk stories, but I felt the performance was bright, lively and well hosted by an encredibly accomplished artist.Did I buy the Evergreen CD,would not have left with out one,'you bet I did' and what a gift, thanks to you Frank.See you again for sure. Life fan Rick.

Run for the bodhran!

Or the guitar or SOMEthing, because listening to this CD will definitely energize you. Frank has created a CD that is a balance of old familiar favorites (like "Jamie Raeburn" and Sally Gardens") with surprising new selections "Isabeau" and "The Dreadful End of Mariana") and even an original or two. Though the songs on this CD are uniformly excellent, the ones that really stood out for me were Frank's version of Karine Polwart's "The Dreadful End of Mariana for Sorcery" and his own "Ireland Follows You". "Mariana" is a powerfully moving rendition that will haunt you long after it is over and "Ireland" has the feel of a song that will quickly become a favorite standard. In addition to lots of great songs, Frank also manages to include some traditional tunes on this CD as well, so there is a little something here for just about everybody. If you are looking for a CD that represents the best of what traditional music can be, look no further than Frank Blair's Evergreen. It is well worth it.
