FREE SÕL has definitely raised the bar with the release of their debut album, 11:11. From start to finish, this CD will prove to be a pure delight for the consummate music fan. That's because the band has masterfully crafted a project that takes you on quite a funky ride through multiple musical genres, all the while never losing the integrity of each style. As a matter of fact, Free sums it up on "Loc'd Out", one of the album's phattest tracks, as he raps, "...do a lotta things but I love hip-hop...mix it with the soul, and the funk, and the rock...add a little jazz then what do you got? HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT! HOT!"
11:11's unlikely assortment of musical flavors is no better realized than when listening to other flagship singles such as "All Night" (a hard-core rock jam), "Crazy" (a smooth R&B cut), and finally, the club mix of "No Need to Lie" (a blazin' hip-hop joint, produced by 7-time GRAMMY nominee, Carlos Broady). This idea of fusing together different musical genres stems from FREE SÕL's sincere desire to unite ALL people through music. In fact, Bill Ellis, entertainment editor for The Commercial Appeal (Memphis' metro newspaper), said that he truly sees what FREE SÕL is doing as "God's work."
Fresh off their win in the 2003 Mid-South GRAMMY Showcase, Free Sõl is positioning itself as the New Memphis Sound. Named after its magnetic front man, this 7- member powerhouse delivers musical mastery with an explosive performance punch.
"A modern day hip-hop Marvin Gaye" - David Porter; Producer, Songwriter
Free Sõl was organized in the fall of 2002, and has quickly solidified itself as one of the hottest, most original collectives around. Moving freely between Hip-Hop, Soul, Rock, R&B, Jazz, and Funk, they engage with amazing proficiency and respect for their craft. The unlikely combination created by unifying live drums, guitar and keyboards with a deejay and a trombone player facilitates their seemingly effortless cruise thru unexpected shifts in musical style.
"You can not deny them." - Carlos Broady, Producer
The musicians that make up this eclectic mix are the perfect embodiment of true uniqueness, with their keen abilities to stimulate emotion through music. Although rooted in hip-hop, the multiplicity of the Free Sõl sound makes it nearly impossible to bind them to one musical genre. Still, the musicianship does not come at the expense of the performance, which highlights the amazing presence and staying power of the band.
"....(they) tore the roof off the sucker and gave up more than the funk."
- Bill Ellis, The Commercial Appeal
Free Sõl is on a mission to deliver a message in a manner that looks past the commercialism of music and allows one to listen, question, agree, disagree, and find deeper meaning through a fusion of musicality and artistic expression.
"Amazing...Period" - Anthony Pittman, Publisher - PartySource Magazine

Hip hop Don't Stop!
author: DJ Eternalle
Hip Hop in the home of the dirty South - I knew the day had to come. I heard this band play at the 2003 Grammy Showcase and they blew my mind. The cross section of different styles of music is pretty heady stuff. Sometimes they hit on the neo-soul tip and other times it's just straight hip hop. They have a couple of political songs too but generally it's just good chill music. I dig on the Black Eyed Peas and Jurassic 5 and Fishbone alot, and this band reminds me of all three. Check out the tracks - everyone should like one or two at least - that's how diverse they are musically. Peace.

Septet Fuses Mix of Musical Styles
author: Bill Ellis - The Commercial Appeal
For those new to the Free Sol experience, the Memphis septet takes bits and pieces from hip-hop, soul, jazz, metal and even ska to come up with the most energetic collision of cultures since, one might argue, that Elvis dude back 50 years ago.
