Coming out of Boston, the Freeways take a neo-psychedelic journey out west on their eponymous debut
full-length album. Songwriters Frank E. Butkus and Karen Zanes chronicle their tales of the desert, sea and
long nights in the city with vocals and guitars drenched in swirling reverb and delay- never using more than
a broad stroke to detail anything from the frenetic to the surreal.
Butkus (guitar, vocals) and Zanes (vocals, guitar) form the core of the group, using it as a platform to document
their often quixotic relationship. They are joined by Mike Swidrak (Sweet Track) on bass and Tim Madden
(Epaulettes) on drums/guitar. They caught the attention of local impresario Albert Polk (Streight Angular)
in a small club in Cambridge, Mass. in the fall of 2008, soon signing to Polk Records over spring rolls and a
handshake at a label showcase.
The Freeways' release awakens the feelings of a road trip starting on the east coast with the vintage pop of
"Whenever You Want Me" and "Neon Light Show," growing steadily more dreamy and complex as the album
heads westward. "Glass Eye" and "Casa Loma" draw inspiration from Karen's time spent with artists in San
Francisco's Haight district. "End of Summer" is a haunting surf instrumental evocative of a twilight's drive south
along the Pacific Coast Highway. Wearing their California-philia on their rolled-up sleeve, the band plows
through a cover of "Shake the Dope Out," by influential L.A. band the Warlocks.
Although a rock band first and foremost, the Freeways have not hesitated to incorporate multimedia material
into their recorded output and live shows, using Super 8 films Butkus and Zanes have created as companions t
o their songs. The band hopes to define and redefine their own work through their ever-changing influences
and artistic experimentation.
