Hailing from Portland, OR, The Friction Brothers bring you tales of down-and-out characters, elliptical commentaries and chronicles of lovesick hallucinations, forming and impressionistic song cycle about summer on their release, The Summer of Friction. Drawing favorable comparisons to a remarkably disparate range of influential musical acts (for one such example, a fan remarked, “...you sound like the Velvet Underground and Creedence Clearwater Revival ...quot; at the same time...”), The Friction Brothers do not rely on any single reference point while creating their music; instead, they seem to be a receptacle into which people pour their hopes and dreams for what the next great rock band should sound like.

I liked almost every song on this CD. The music is fresh and original and there is actually talent there. A very worthwhile purchase.

Mmm...

With an album full of great songs and brimming with enthusiastic performances, and almost nary a wasted moment during the 41-minute running time (in an era when people feel it is necessary to 'give consumers their money's worth' by cramming 80 minutes of music onto a CD when at least 75 of them are superfluous, this is refreshing), what's not to like? The fact that there are very few excellent rock bands anymore, and even fewer that are releasing excellent albums, only heightens the essentiality of this album. And any band who manages to rock out "River Deep - Mountain High" even more than Bob Seger did back when he covered it (back when he actually put out more than one album a decade) deserves extra credit.
