FROM THE BRIDGE, the chamber-jazz string trio featuring double-bassist John Davey, classical guitarist Dennis Turechek and violist Amy Merrill have been performing their unique blend of original compositions by bassist Davey and guitarist Turechek as well as the works of Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, Villa-Lobos, Laurendo Almeida, Peter Schikele throughout the Central New York area since the fall of 1998.
Recent concerts include performances at the Ithaca Festival, The West Kortright Center, Cobleskill Concert Series and concerts sponsored through the Catskill Conservatory, and collaborative concerts with jazz cellist Hank Roberts, and world percussionist Brian "Uduboy" Melick.
From performances at the Syracuse JazzFest, "Original and compelling music reminding us what a wide-open world jazz really is...The Bridge successfully spans many islands of jazz...there was a taste of this and a dash of that...
It all added up to a unique and delicious string stew....All the while, the musicians were confident enough to march to their own muse." Mark Bialczak--Syracuse Post Standard.
"John Davey is a melodic bassist as well as a fine composer,,,'Tango' is a piece which suits the group well. Davey's nicely conceived solo is followed by a virtuostic display from violist Amy Merrill...The musical content has a lot of value. The ambiance is friendly and intimate, with very listenable results." Malcolm Creese, Double Bassist Magazine, UK Autumn, 2002

The talent behind this is obvious. Easy to listen to over and over.

Latin jazz played on strings. Unamplified and all acoustic chamber jazz. An improvising string trio of double bass, viola, and classical guitar very at home in the jazz idiom. Very cool, and very soothing, this is a record that will take you away.

Unique!

I don't think I've ever heard anything quite like this trio. Not that there aren't familiar elements, just haven't heard them blended this way before. And it's exactly this sort of new combinations that I love to hear. I don't think the sample selections here quite do justice to the variety on this CD, at least the parts that I favor. "Turquoise" and "Molasses" are splendid.
