notes
Full Frontal Folk - guaranteed to knock your socks off! These women(Fatale/Wendy Fuhr, Lolita/Jennifer Schonwald, Jezebel/Thea Shoulson and Delilah/Courtney Malley) were exposed to many different genres of music while growing up in their local folk music community. All of their songs are delivered with beautiful vocal arrangements, which are at times polished, quirky, haunting, or poignant.
Their instrumentation, including 6 and 12 string guitars, bass, mandolin, fiddle and percussion, never takes away from their powerful voices. The group was formed in 2001 and exploded into the folk scene where they quickly developed a reputation for their phenomenal vocal blends, intricate harmonies and their "Gen-X" attitude.
They soon added percussionist extraordinaire Desdemona/Cheryl Prashker to the mix thereby completing the full sensory experience of "Full Frontal Folk".

Hooked on FFF
author: Ye Olde ToadeCan't say enough good things about this recording...one of my faves of the last 20 years!! Most times when I buy a CD, I'm lucky if I like half the songs on it. 75% is doing VERY well. But in this case I like every single song. This is the CD you use to convert people who say "I don't really like folk music." You will after you hear this! And for those who are already folk fans: buy two copies. You'll play the CD so often you'll wear it out :)
Another example of how much great music is out there
author: Fredgreat harmonies; musicians willing to take a risk; some wonderful traditional music with contemporary voices. You'll love this. I have.
- author: No Limits
Think all great harmonies are created in the studio by endless re-takes, overdubs, and dial twiddling??? (think CSNY, Yes). Well, brothers and sisters, if that's what you think then keep on listening to classic rock. On the other hand, if you count yourself among the ultra-cool you will by now have heard FFF in concert and bought this CD. (Hint# 1: BUY IT !!!)(Hint #2: Go see them live). If you don't buy this CD then you will forever be cast with the lost and culturally deprived souls still listening to Wilson Phillips( aargh!!!) and miss out on the aural treat of 4 talented, sexy, highly evolved, musically well endowed ladies.
Took a chance on this one and hit the jackpot!
author: Shannon SmithThere's not a whole lot I can add to the praise that has already been heaped on this CD. I love Seven Bridges Road and bought the CD primarily to have another version of the song. It's a terrific rendition! The very pleasant surprise is that it's not my favorite song on the album, unless it's the one that's playing. The same can be said of all the songs! Best of all is the way my 13-year-old daughter has fallen head over heels for this recording. I love hearing her singing little snippets of various things as she's bouncing down the hall, or doing her homework, or whatever. I'm ordering the other one, I'm hoping there'll be more, and I'm ordering extras as gifts. You cannot go wrong with this album. Period. Oh yeah -- appeal to the artists -- COME TO SAN FRANCISCO!!! Thank you.
Knock-out folk-rock!
author: Donna S.This is a terrific and eclectic CD featuring powerhouse vocals, harmony, range and style. I got their second CD first and to be honest, was not expecting the same level of quality in the first one. I'm so pleased to have been wrong! Consistently high quality from start to finish.
Full Frontal Amazingness
author: AnneThis Cd is just a great example of good harmonies, some funny creativity, and mostly what FFF is amazing at, interperting songs into their own. Non stop in the Cd player, on the computer. So much music
Can't stop listening to this CD!
author: Katy RoussosThis CD is excellent! I love to sing along to each song and have memorized them all. A combination of traditional and modern folk songs, the artists do much justice to songs written by others. Their harmonies and musicianship is superb!
Outstanding harmonies!!
author: design daveSuperb harmonies - Wayfaring stranger is one of the best heartfelt songs I have ever heard. Next time I'd like to hear some home written songs. Beautiful stuff!!
You girls Rock!!!!
author: Karen BlackRecieved my 4 cd's and already have given them away. I want to spread the good word about fff! These girls are great! The best! Can't wait for their next CD.
CELTIC MADE COOL!
author: Nurse JudiThe Philly Folk Fest's own! The blending of these voices gives a wonderous harmony. The music is something that makes you stop, listen and then say....."Hey, who's that?" and then go and want to buy the CD! (Personally, I want everyone to check out their version of Mr. Right Now...) OH.... AND those brave women for their cover! You go GIRLS-any hopefully all the way to fame and fortune!
Wonderful music - I LOVE IT!
author: Nina RThis is just such a wonderful CD - I heard Another Train on the radio, ordered the CD and couldn't wait to get it in the mail. The voices blend so beautifully - reminds me of Trio, Dixie Chicks and The Roches. I can't wait to see this group in person and to get the next CD. Keep up the great work!
Terrific CD
author: Lou ProctorA terrific cd. The ladies harmonies make listening to this cd a pure joy. They are able to handle different types of folk with ease. Even my 14 year old hip-hop, rap fan daughter thinks its a great cd. Looking forward to their next effort.
These ladies rock! They have it all! I love them!
author: SkeeterThese ladies rock! They have it all: great harmonies, nice choice of material, great musicianship -- oh yeah, and they look great too. The CD sounds great -- very nice production. I'm a big fan. Can't wait for their next one! Hard to compare them to anyone, but if you are among the millions who love the Dixie Chicks, you're gonna love Full Frontal Folk too. I love turning people on to this CD. Buy one, and then buy some more for birthday and Christmas presents.
Tight harmonies! A fun frolic with the four Frontals!
author: GlendaI love the variety on this CD-old, new, slow & swinging! Another Train touches me deeply. I am so glad to have this music available at my whim. The harmonies are crisp, the voices strong and beautiful.
Love those harmonies
author: KizzThis was my first taste of Full Frontal Folk and I loved it. I prefer the spirituals and traditionals and of course Dona Nobis Beer. I could have happily listened to an entire a cappella CD, just getting lost in the great way the voices blend.
One of the best folk CDs I own...
author: EmI first heard Full Frontal Folk at a Philly Folk Song presentation of Da Vinci's Notebook (which isn't folk at all!), and the audience was so amazed that we brought them out for an encore, which was unexpected by the band. I was so excited about their CD that when it finally came out (and when I could finally afford it) I bought it, and while I waited I listened to the clips over and over. Their harmonization is stunning, and they've picked some beautiful songs to cover. Their only original work (their own lyrics) on the album ("The Beer Song") is hilarious and I'm hoping their next CD will include more. These women are immensely talented and this is an excellent debut album. If you like folk, check this out.
four poweful and distictive voices create a beautiful melding of sound
author: Mike Miller for Philadelphia Folksong Society monthly newsletter“ . . . Full Frontal Folk, as gifted a vocal ensemble as our town has heard for decades, have released a CD (Storming the Castle) that features an a cappella that is expressive, creative and, altogether, charming. Thea Shoulson, Jen Schneck, Courtney Malley, and Wendy Fuhr have managed to make the cleanliness of their voices into a fine instrument that reads lyrics with dramatic force. Their interpretation is their strength, no less than their lovely sound . . .I, usually, don’t like a cappella groups adding instruments in to the mix . . .but Wendy Fuhr’s violin parts are so tasteful . . .High praise, indeed.”
From celtic to trad to twang to almost pop-real professional to boot
author: Judith GennettFull Frontal Folk is four women from Pennsylvania who harmonize, weave melodies and pose discretely nude on the front cover of Storming The Castle. Though the album is manufactured from the same lowly CDR that I use to rerecord my Kimmo Pohjonen accordion bootlegs, the music itself, like Kimmo's, is very nicely performed and produced, and quite a pleasure to listen to! The traditional and cover songs, backed by the many acoustic instruments, include twang (Steve Young's "Seven Bridges Road"), American trad (the a capella "Wayfaring Stranger"), Celtic (a serving of "Colcannon" with light bodhran), and more. Full Frontal Folk sings Andy Irvine's pretty Balkan "Blood and Gold," the second version I've heard on a new release within the past couple weeks. And can't you just hear the Ulyssean convicts dragging their chains on "Didn't Leave Nobody But the Baby"!! The gals' voices contrast quite a bit, one gritty, one like a little bird, and the other two in the middle, and the arrangements differ too. All the genres and voices and arrangements make for a fresh and captivating variety, and the Frontals do really sing and play well!
