Somewhere between a power pop kiss and alt-rock punch lies Full Moon Blanket.

The album kicks off with the infectious “Matter Of Time”, a melodic rocker about a rocky relationship that ultimately ends. This song has multiple hooks, with the prime one being “you say you know me but you don’t”. The second track is called “One Wish”, a peppy power pop song reminiscent of another local band The Lolas. The lyrics again tackle a troubled relationship, with the witty chorus “you say you never want to see me again, I can make that wish come true, maybe one day you’ll sing a different tune”. The harmonies and song-craft are solid, only slightly marred by the track’s abrupt fadeout. Next is “Fight Or Flight”, another catchy power pop tune about a failing relationship, with a chorus proclaiming “I am letting go”. There are more similarities to The Lolas here, particularly in the vocals. The fourth track “Dig” is the highlight of the album. It starts with an instant-classic riff and builds to the memorable chorus “I dig down deep”. With great harmonies and multiple hooks, this song would fit right in with the Cheap Trick catalogue of hits. Track #5 is “Another Sorry”, a song about how sometimes apologies just aren’t enough. This is a weak spot on the album, as it has no hooks that really stick.
Track #6 is a peaceful acoustic interlude appropriately entitled “The Sweet Spot”. Next is “17 Good Ways”, a mid-tempo tune about road trips and relationships. In this powerful song, two elements stand out: the acappella outro chorus “leaving the driving to me”, and the clever wordplay in “counterfeit bill in a counterfeit country, I counter to see if she’s fit to come home”. The eighth track is “March”, an upbeat song with great harmonies. This is the other weak spot on here, primarily due to the lack of a definite chorus. Track #9 is an unlisted, untitled interlude that adds some atmosphere to the album. The final track is “At A Loss”, a compelling, harmony-filled song that expands on the ambiance of the preceding interlude. This is a sobering tale of trying to help a friend who has a drug problem (“needle and a pipe”). He tells the friend, “together we could break the chains and set you free...but you can’t depend on me”.
This is a strong effort from the guys of Full Moon Blanket. With the style (harmonies and wordplay) backed by substance (hooks and story-songs), this album has it all. I can safely say “Another First” won’t be their last.
