I was immediately drawn to this band the first time I caught one of their performances at CBGB’s in 1997. I followed this group around, visited their studio and joined them at several gigs around town and upstate New York. The Funkface brought to the stage the rare quality of setting themselves apart from the rest. Wearing the ghetto on their sleeves and hating middle of the road Hip Hop and R+B they played guitar driven rock, which after Hendrix’s passing has become a domain of white folks. While jumping up in the air, making splits on the stage and diving into the audience, they made fun whenever they could of the narrow formulas of mainstream American culture, in particular the aforementioned notion that only white people play rock. Well, seeing all the fun they had, they obviously weren’t too bitter about that. On the other hand they never let anybody take them too lightly either. Sensing irritation in the crowd definitely seemed to spur them on to perform still more outrageously. There was always a pretty good riot going on when they performed. Musically, it was all backed up, which made them such a joy to watch. There was a real talent to incorporate a variety of rootsy sounding musical styles, such as Funk, Soul, Rockn’Roll, Punk and Core into well-crafted songs. I have all Funkface CDs. All are great. Get them and make sure to catch them live!
