Album Notes

"Surely Like The Rain", the debut CD of Fussy ain't half bad. The band was formed in the early 2000's to give form to singer/songwriter Matt Van Dyke's ditties inspired by a year in Portland with his wife Susie and about "those things that pop into your head". Bassist/keyboardist Chris McGreevy and drummer Tony Hecker were the first to join Matt - and the fussiness began. Seriously short on nuggets, the band enlisted lead guitarist John Sauer and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Spencer to form the Fussy lineup you see today. The band went into BeerSpill Studios in early 2005 to begin recording. "Surely Like the Rain" is the culmination of their efforts.

Focusing on sparseness and simplicity, Fussy has developed a style based on playing less, believing the space between notes is as important as the notes themselves.

Fussy have been together since 2000 but it has taken them this long to get round to releasing their debut album of just 9 songs! With a work ethic like that, it can only be hoped that all 9 songs are excellent. ‘One Fine Day’ is an entertaining country tune that opens the album nicely and, ‘Surely Like the Rain’ is another highlight. Fussy would definitely be worth catching live. DW

Unique sound. I keep changing which of the songs is my favorite.

I love the phrasing of the lyrics. The CD really flows. My current favorite is My Next Bit, but Oaktree and Damn Funny Thing always have to be played a minimum of twice in a row. The lead guitar and mandolin sneak up on me, over and over I am struck by how right they sound. Just plain old good stuff.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah - it's my buddies and my brother who make the band Fussy, but this CD will work for you too. It has all the goods: songs that you love immediately and (my favorite) the songs that grow better with each listen. My favorite song keeps changing with each listen. Now That's Music!!
