Chase that rabbit!
Gale's an amazing singer/songwriter for whom I have been lucky enough to work with for many years. Getting to produce her latest CD, "Chasing The Rabbit", was an immense pleasure, very educational and often humbling. I'd see her and she'd say, "I think I have a new song," then she would play "Breathtaking" for me for the first time, or "So Easy", or "Money Changes Everything" and I'd think, "Jesus, where are all these great songs coming from ?" As a songwriter I found her output of excellent material staggering and inspiring. When approaching the production of this CD for me, it was really crucial not to bury the songs in too much hocus pocus and just find a way to frame the songs in a clear and complimentary atmosphere. We worked on the CD for a long time as I was also learning how to find my way around the new Pro Tools environment. We experimented with a lot of the songs but usually came back to a spartan arrangement leaving only the most intriguing sounds that didn't interfere with the focus: Gale's emotive and beautiful voice, her seductive melodies and introspective lyrics. Almost all the harmonies were Gale's idea and I fought her on some of them but in retrospect, her instinct for where and what to sing was spot on. I played most of the instruments on the CD so I can't really say much about that except I'm very proud of the work I did and it was a lot of fun to be able to create solos and supportive rhythms and sounds on such inspiring songs. However, a few other tremendous musicians lent their talents to "Chasing The Rabbit". Lenny Austin, a local legend in these parts provided some beautiful guitar work on "Like A Comet". The multi-talented David Shelley really helped to propel several songs with his ferocious percussion skills. Another of Gale's musical partners, Tracy Labarbera, lent her electric piano to "Sore Loser". And last but not least, Gale performed a very cool duet with the incomparable Brian Harris on "Darkness". There were a few other collaborations of note. Gale and songwriter Jeff Blake composed "Moon Came Calling" together and I was lucky enough to have Gale sing one of mine called "Never Know". Being so close to this recording I could literally write a book about it and go into detail on each tune. Sample the CD on her website or CDBaby page and I think you'll really enjoy it.
