Album Notes

" Classifying Natalie Gamsu as a vocalist doesn't begin to tell the story. Yes, she's a splendid singer with a majestic voice that bespeaks wisdom and passion. But, what an actress-no, what an artist" (Roy Sander, Backstage)

Born in Namibia, Natalie Gamsu established a following on the Southern African cabaret circuit with her own solo cabaret shows and appearances with the a capella group, NOT THE MIDNIGHT MASS.

Occasional forays into the musical theatre followed, including a DALRO award winning performance in NUNSENSE (Sister Hubert), BLUES IN THE NIGHT (Woman of the World), and CANDIDE (Old Woman) - for which she won a VITA Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical. Classical roles include The Witch of Endor in the oratorio KING DAVID (Linder Auditorium, Johannesburg) and the title role in the SABC television production of Bizet's CARMEN.

She appeared in several series of the SABC drama series THE BIG TIME, earning a TONIGHT award for Best Actress in a Television Series, and a VITA Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Since 1992 she has lived and worked in New York. She made her Manhattan debut at the Greenwich Village cabaret room Club 88, where she has subsequently headlined six seasons in her own shows. She has also performed at The Oak Room (The Algonquin Hotel), The FireBird, Fez (under Time Cafe), The Russian Tea room, The Ballroom, Bradstan Country Inn and the Mabel Mercer Cabaret Convention at Town Hall. Natalie has performed at The Cinegrill in Los Angeles, and The Express in Fresno. She won the Backstage Bistro Award in 1994 for Outstanding Vocalist and was nominated for a MAC Award for Outstanding Debut in the same year. She won the MAC Award for Outstanding Female Vocalist in 1997, and again in 2000.

Natalie Gamsu was a regular cast member of Blair Fell's long-running live soap opera, BURNING HABITS, in which she created the role of Hecuba Baboom the crooning clairvoyant.

In September '96 she made her London Debut at the ICA, in Gary Carter's ACTS AND REVELATIONS, and performed her one-woman show with cellist Kathryn Locke.

She performed in Gary Carter's, ANGER IS NOT A PLACE I LIKE TO BE commissioned for the Birmingham Rep.,UK in June 2000.

Natalie recently completed a seven week run (as part of an International Festival of Cabaret), at The Oak Room at the Algonquin Hotel.

This CD is powerful, transporting and healing
author: Paul Browde
This CD is a voyage across time and the whole world. As I float on Natalie Gamsu's voice I am moved, inspired and suprised. Suprised by songs I thought I'd heard before, and now hear as if for the first time. The day George Harrison died I listened to Ms Gamsu's rendition of Something, over and over, and the world was okay for a little while. Her rendition of Hotgates should be an anthem for all the world to hear and sing.

This an amazing selection of songs, sung by a truly gifted artist.

This is an amazing CD. The selection of songs covers many genres and is wonderful. Ms. Gamsu's voice is a beautiful instrument. Her interpretations of Space Oddity and Calling All Angels are thrilling. And who would have thought someone could do yet another version of Something and have it sound fresh and new. I look forward to her next CD.
