notes

Tim Fleming
Guitar & Vocals
Tim was born in Killarney Co. Kerry to a large musical family. His parents and two of his brothers have heavily influenced Tim's playing. After the tragic death of his brother Jeremiah, he took to the guitar and started playing in sessions around Killarney. Upon moving to New York his brother Sean became a mentor to him. When he came to Chicago he fell into the local scene having met the local talent through the Drovers. He has since played in many groups and with many prominent Irish musicians including Overton, Weststrife, Kathleen Keane, Brendan McKinney and Larry Nugent to name a few. Being a free spirit he has recently come back from a 16 month tour of the world with much musical inspiration.

Christy Bain
Fiddle
A Chicago native, Christy has played in several local bands including The Drovers, Anish, and Trinity Irish Dance Company. He went to the University of North Wales, Bangor, for a year. Christy played in support of several Welsh trad bands including Robin Huw Bowen ( Welsh triple harpist), and with members of Ar Log and Crasdant. Christy has also spent time in Ireland playing his fiddle and learning tunes from the lads. Aside from playing with Gan Bua, he is an integral part of the Chicago Irish music scene.

Sheila Doorley (Button Accordion & Vocals)

Sheila comes from Tullamore, Co. Offaly. She started playing the button accordion at the early age of four. Her music was greatly influenced by neighbouring Tipperary box player Paddy O' Brien. She was an active member of Comhaltas and won many Leinster titles on both accordion and melodeon. She also taught at the Culturlann in Dublin for four years. Before moving to Chicago, Sheila played for six years with celtic rock band ' Sans Souci ' and toured Europe and the Middle East. She also toured with the Davey Arthur band for a year.

Gan Bua performed here in Champaign a couple of weeks ago. What a great, hard-driving group, definitely centered around that wailing fiddler. I bought their latest album at the concert, and the earlier on here at CD Baby, and will be playing both on the local community radio Celtic show (WEFT Champaign, 90.1 FM, "Celtic Music Go Braugh, Go Braugh"). Oh, yeah.

I took a gamble in buying this after hearing the short clips and I'm so happy I did! This will get spins on my radio show - for sure. Fine musicianship - why haven't I heard about these folks?

THis is the second time I bought the disc. I was plastered when I bought the CD after hearing Gan Bua at the IAHC and watching my kids dance to the music. Unlike most other drunken purchases, the disc held up under the harsh light of morning sobriety and remained in heavy rotation in my CD player until it wore out.

  • Great CD! A must have!!

I saw this band perform at the Irish Fest and was just blown away! Their music is get up on your feet and move music! I could have listened to them play for hours. So, of course I had to have their CD. It's almost as good as hearing them live ( nothing can compare to Irish music live. ) The recording is crisp and clean. Crank it up and you're there!!!

In the spirit of Dervish, Solas, Danu, and the like, this driving, flighty, bodhran-motored, Chicago-based band steps out into the light with their head-turning sound that can only come from top notch musicianship and immaculately-crisp delivery. Appealing to the need for lilting jigs and fourth-gear reels, Gan Bua takes their music several steps further, delivering more than the average pub group, which is plainly clear with their instantly palpable spirit that sweeps you off your feet- or, rather *on* your feet. If Irish music of any kind perks the heart rate, absolutely don't miss this.
