Album Notes

This album is a compilation of material recorded between 1988 - 1994 by some of the founding members of Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams in their former band "The Ancestors." Over the past few years many of our fans requested that we release some of our earlier work, so we decided to fulfill that request with this first release "from the archives".

This record reveals to our friends and fans some of the "missing" years, as it were, through these recordings made by that group.

The Ancestors had a revolving lineup over the years, as you can see in the credits, the most enduring incarnation was the band that toured mainland China in January of 1993. The cover photo is of that band. Left to right:
Sharkey McEwen, Tink Lloyd, Joziah Longo, Bob Muller (Trey Gunn Band), Brian Hardgroove (currently of Public Enemy), and Alistair Farrant (who was engineer and producer for the band in the early years).

Thanks for all of you who helped The Circus get to the point where we are now, and we hope you enjoy this blast from the past.....

another sparkling circus gem to add to all the current stuff the fans already know about, gives us a bit more of clue about the early days of this unusual and quirky band and how they got their start...kind of like the flapjack batter right before it hit the griddle...with all the right ingredients.

I'm writing this from Germany; so please have mercy if my English wasn't that well. I happened to find this CD at CDBABY but it was out of stock that time. So I went on searching and found THE ANCESTORS because some tracks on the ANCIENT MURPHY CD were taken from the ANCESTORS' album Brigadoon. This album was the first for me to get and it didn't leave my player for days. As the CDBABY folks told me that ANCIENT MURPHY was back in stock I orderes it immediately and I must say that it is one of the best CDs I listened to for a long time. Great mujsic, really!

i've been a circus follower for about 3 years since i first saw them in a tiny venue in vt. After many hours listening to Thief and Flapjacks over and over again (no boredom here), i feel blessed to be able to enjoy this "new" release....good lord, these guys can't make bad music even if they tried. With Joz' melodic vocals reminiscent of the lead singer of the Monkees (slips my mind, Peter?), a tad of Petty ,a touch of Tull and alittle everything else great, they cannot fail ya. Great in concert, great in your living room. They refuse to go mainstream even though they possess THE APPEAL, so I'll just keep spreading the word : the CIRCUS RULES. amen
