Album Notes

THE PRESS
Andres Segovia "remarkable talent"

guitarist, 13- year old Lynne Gangbar, performed for him. Segovia agreed
that she has remarkable talent".

application that she was only twelve...he could not believe it. This very
self-possessed young guitarist has what Bream describes as "star quality"."
Times of London, England "She has the rare ability to shine in both
quiet, sensitive playing and bravura flash...the performances were unusually
compelling..."
Globe and Mail - Toronto "Technically dazzling...virtuoso brilliance"
Ottawa Citizen "She fully exploited the technical and musical resources
of this difficult instrument...played with a power and clarity rarely heard on the

Creative Guitar International "She could be another Ida Presti...playing
with fire, insight, and magnificent technical assurance."

fire and gusto [and] depth of expression."
Fretwire, London, England "I was staggered by her virtuosity and musicianship

her name is going to be ranked amongst the greatest players..."
New York Times "She played with the security and precision of an old master"
Alexander Lagoya "magnificent talent"

THE BIO
Canadian born Lynne Gangbar has been acclaimed by audiences and
critics alike.
Lynne was born in Toronto and began studing the guitar
at the age of seven. At twelve, she was a performer in Julian Bream's
televised masterclasses in Stratford, Ontario and went on to study with other
guitar masters including Alexandre Lagoya, Oscar Ghiglia, Narciso Yepes
and Alirio Diaz. When she was 19 years old, she appeared, at Bream's invitation,
in his BBC television masterclasses.

Lynne has given numerous recitals in Canada, Great Britain and the
U.S. receiving rave reviews for her debuts in Toronto, London (Eng.) &
New York. Her concert in London's famed Wigmore Hall elicited this
response in the London Times: "She has the rare ability to shine in both
quiet, sensitive playing and bravura flash...the performances were unusually
compelling..."

She has received scholarships and many important awards including 2
maximum grants from the Canada Council. Lynne is a graduate from the
Royal College of Music in London (Eng.) where she received several
awards including an Exhibition (Scholarship) which Bream won when he
attended the same college.

Aside from her solo performing Lynne Gangbar has played with orchestra
and toured in a guitar duo with John Mills. She has been presented on
Canadian and U.S. Radio and has recorded 2 LPs with the CBC.

The Live "In Concert" CBC recording from her very early twenties
clearly demonstrates an unusually powerful technique and communicates
a deep sense of emotion, understanding and insight which is rarely heard
on the guitar. Miss Gangbar's musicality and virtuosity has been compared
by the critics to the legendary Ida Presti. She also won the praise of
Andres Segovia - he said that she had "remarkable talent" when she
played for him at the age of thirteen.

In March of 1981, at the request of the Canadian government, Lynne
performed for U.S. President Ronald Reagan and an audience
that included Prime Minister Trudeau and Governor General Schreyer
at Ottawa's Rideau Hall.

In the early 1980's, Lynne withdrew from public performances for
personal reasons, but never gave up, for any length of time, her
involvement with music and the guitar.

THE PRESENT
In recent years, with the encouragement of her husband, Lynne has been
recording. This first CD is a brilliant recording of 20 Scarlatti harpsichord
Sonatas which she has adapted for 2 guitars (playing both parts).

This recording was recently featured on the very influential CBC radio
program "Sound Advice" hosted by Rick Philips, who gave the disc
5-Star rating, also said: "

"The name Lynne Gangbar was heard pretty often in Canada back in the
1970's and 80's, but for a variety of reasons, her career tapered off.
Like Glenn Gould, Lynne Gangbar enjoys the quiet and solitude of the
recording studio.
Based on this recording of Scarlatti, I hope to hear more in the months
and years to come - five out of five !"

REVIEWS

Mesmerizing, virtuoso performance, marvelous selections
author: Charles Hall
Thank you, Lynne, for returning to the recording studio! This collection is among the top few recordings for guitar of Scarlatti sonatas that has ever been produced, and I've listened to most of them. Lynne has made beautiful selections here, and sequenced them thoughtfully. She has included three "Kirkpatrick pairs" (K. 115 & 116, 119 & 120, 132 & 133) and then has, in effect, created other complementary pairings by transcribing her choices into related keys. For example, the first two tracks, K. 33 & 84, are transcribed from D major and C minor respectively, into E major and E minor. This complementary pairing continues throughout the album, which lends a seamless flow to the music from start to finish. Lynne's instrumental technique is of the highest caliber, sure-fingered, agile and quick in her navigation of the most difficult passages. The ornamentation is handled smoothly and convincingly. She doesn't shy away from the faster tempi either: half a dozen of the pieces are designated Allegrissimo or Presto, and she is up to the task, maintaining an even, balanced tone throughout. In fact, there are only two slow tempo sonatas out of the 20 presented, which adds to the driving and exciting quality of the album. Another delight is that she has recorded many less familiar Scarlatti sonatas that haven't been a part of the guitar repertoire until now. All of the transcriptions are by Ms. Gangbar, and by my count, at least seven of these pieces (K. 18, 29, 46, 84, 120, 133, 455) are first-time-ever recordings on guitar. Many of the works presented could not be done justice with a single guitar, and Lynne's decision to be her own duo partner in the studio works very well. As far as stylistic interpretation of Scarlatti, I am not an expert, but the listening experience is thoroughly invigorating and satisfying. The sound engineering is quite good, as well, with very intimate placement of the microphones. The two guitars are not widely separated in stereo, giving more of the illusion of a single instrumental presence. In case you haven't noticed, I'm pretty enthusiastic about this recording, and I hope the word gets around. Lynne Gangbar is a world-class musician who deserves a wide hearing. I hope we won't have to wait too long for the next installment of the musical evolution of this fantastic artist!

This recording absolutely sparkles with the joy of this music. Wonderful playing, well-recorded. If I had any doubts about Scarlatti on guitar before, they're gone now--brava!!

An imaginative artist with a sure grasp of Scarlatti’s idiom.
author: Tom Poore (Cleveland Heights, OH)
Scarlatti revels in virtuoso display—not just finger pyrotechnics, but also a quicksilver mind that can respond to every shade of accent and color. Lynne Gangbar proves herself equal to this challenge. Don’t let the homespun look of the CD cover put you off. This is high caliber playing from an imaginative artist with a sure grasp of Scarlatti’s idiom. A quibble: the intonation isn’t always spot on. But the sheer energy and joy carry the day. No guitarist has better conveyed Scarlatti’s “ingenious jesting with art.”
