His earliest memories are about music. Listening to AM transistor radio and vinyl 45’s with a ceramic needle soon gave way to listening to New York’s WNEW-FM in the late 60’s. But the turning point in Gary’s musical life came when he first heard Eric Clapton on Best of Cream, a gift from older sister Peggy. She thought he should listen to Ginger Baker, being that Gary was a drummer in the school band, but hearing Clapton’s soaring guitar solo in Spoonful delivered the jolt that turned his head and heart around forever. Since then his musical loves have come to include not only The Beatles, but Stevie Ray Vaughn, Carole King, John McLaughlin, Hendrix, CSNY, Chopin and many other classical masters, etc... Gary brings it all into the 21st century.
For the last four decades, since around the age of ten, Gary has made the guitar his primary instrument. But he also plays piano, drums, and anything else that crosses his path and belongs on a recording.
Songwriting didn’t become a serious passion of Gary’s until the mid-90’s. He admits that before then he assumed he couldn’t write lyrics, yet he always loved the sound and etymology of words. Why didn’t he start sooner? Ask him, and he’ll tell you he wished he knew, and so does everyone else that has had the pleasure of hearing his songs.
Which does he enjoy more, writing and recording his own songs, or playing for audiences both solo and with his band Thunderhouse? Another question with no answer. Watch him closely, and you’ll probably agree that what he enjoys most seems to be whatever he’s doing musically at the moment. Anyone that has ever seen or heard Gary play is struck by his intense musical passion and delivery.

Amazing!

This is a truly remarkable effort. Who is this guy, Todd Rundgren, or Paul McCartney, playing all the instruments except drums on ONE song? Unbelievable! I would like to hear more singing from Gary, although the other singers are great. This is a REAL SURPRISE, very well done. Thanks.

Tribute
author: Barbara Alt
I'm 75 but I liked just about everything on this album even though it is not my generation's music. I'm also related to Gary but would not let that influence my taste in music. I know he is talented and deserves a tribute of his own.

A classy, tuneful tribute
author: Joel Samberg
What a wonderful way to say "thank you" to all those artists who gave us so much emotional companionship over the years. Not only do the songs on TRIBUTE pay homage to many of the greats, but as originals they're also enjoyable musical presents that should have a place in any personal CD library. Also, it's a comfort to know that I wasn't the only kid on Long Island (35 years ago) who eagerly switched between the Beatles and Bacharach, between Carole and Corea, when the mood called for it. Back then, there were many musical 'elites' in school who scoffed at some styles and genres and the people who appreciated them. Gary Alt's TRIBUTE give those elites lifelong detention, while the rest of us are given lifelong extra credit--just as this terrific CD project deserves credit, too.

And then some too...

This is by far the most ambitious musical project Sir Alt has undertaken to date. It is clear from this offering that he has been paying attention to his musical tutors. In fact, there are a couple of things he could teach them. Yet, despite all this Gary still has the modesty to represent himself as a stick figure in comparison to the so-called icons of popular music.
There is certain to be something here for everyone who loves music and enjoys the work of a true artisan. I'll be popping this one into my player for years to come.
