Album Notes

Obviously a sort of left-handed homage to the master; this project began as an attempt to recreate the bluesy New York folk/rock of the 1960s. The end result contains a little West Coast jangle as well. During the course of the recording, the band ended up covering three Dylan songs (two of which were done in a more “modern” style).
The rest of the songs were written using some of the common changes folk composers often use, and with the kinds of instrumentation you’d find on a folk/rock record. The songs are often slightly ragged and intentionally loosely arranged, but some of them could pass for outtakes from Highway 61… maybe.
Applegate’s cover of “I want you” is probably derived from Bruce Springsteen’s late seventies version. “Love Minus Zero/No Limit” could have been on “Younger Than Yesterday” if McGuinn was singing instead of Applegate.
This is Applegate’s second solo album and it’s no where near as dark as the previous one. It also only contains one previously released Big Fat Pet Clams From Outer Space song (the clams are Applegate's main focus). The end result is pretty close to what the guys set out to do, bluesy New York folk/rock.
