Belgian review in Rootstime

Akoestische folksongs dreigen nogal eens snel tot verveling te leiden omdat het meestal over een zanger gaat die zijn verhaaltjes vertelt op de tonen van een akoestische gitaar ter begeleiding. Dan kom je al gauw bij de betere straatzanger in de hedendaagse winkel-wandelstraten terecht. We moeten eerlijk zeggen dat ook wij daar geregeld last van hebben en we ons dan afvragen hoe diezelfde liedjes zouden klinken mochten ze met een volledige muzikale omlijsting gebracht worden. Dat kom je echter nooit te weten en is dus wel een gemiste kans. Zo vergaat het ons ook bij de beluistering van de cd “Wail And Holler” van de Britse zanger en liedjesschrijver Gary Fulton, woonachtig in het lieflijke Winsford nabij Cheshire in Engeland. Zijn minimalistische folksound is te vergelijken met de protestsongs uit de sixties en seventies zoals we ze kennen van artiesten als Bob Dylan en Joan Baez. In de liedjes “Crooked Path”, “Leather Shoes” en “Shower Upon The Grass” krijg je al meteen dat hierboven beschreven gevoel van eenheidsworst. Gelukkig wordt het nadien wat vrolijker met een song over een nochtans triest thema “English Rain”. Muzikaal is het echter te vaak nogmaals van hetzelfde. En tot onze spijt moeten we ook meegeven dat we ook niet echt onder de indruk zijn van de vocale prestaties van Gary Fulton. Met zijn nasale stem toont hij aan over een eerder typische folkstem te beschikken en bevestigt hij nogmaals de aloude clichés hierover. Toch zijn er enkele liedjes die ons wel kunnen bekoren zoals het eerder vermelde “English Rain”, “I Watch From Afar” en afsluiter “A Tipple For The Rogue”. Dat komt voornamelijk omdat er wat meer ritme in die nummers verwerkt zit, hetgeen overigens ook enkele andere artiesten lijkt te bevallen zoals we kunnen lezen in de quotes van Cara Luft en Martin Stephenson op de MySpace-site van Gary Fulton.
