Gary Talley is the original lead GUITAR player for the Grammy-nominated Memphis group, The Box Tops, who recorded #1 single \"The Letter\" (gimme a ticket for an aeroplane....) #2 single \"Cry like a Baby\" and several more charting singles. The Letter\" was the FIRST Number one single recorded in Memphis! (Elvis\' number ones were recorded in Nashville) The group played with The Beachboys, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Steppenwolf, the Young Rascals, Canned Heat, The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, The Monkees, Sly Stone, Neil Diamond, and other 60\'s megastars. The Box Tops reunited(with ALL 5 original members) in 1997 and recorded \"The Box Tops Tear Off\" in Memphis (again). They kicked off a reunion tour at The House of Blues in Hollywood and still play in the U.S. and Europe.
After the Box Tops, Gary did STUDIO GUITAR in Memphis, Atlanta, New York and at London\'s ABBEY ROAD studio recording with such artists as Jerry Butler, Rosey Grier (yes, THAT Rosey Grier!) The Memphis Horns, Ace Cannon, Steve Dorff, Paul Davis, Billy Joe Royal, Billy Lee Riley, and otros. He also toured and did club dates with Pat Boone,Tennessee Ernie Ford, John Phillips (Mamas&Papas), Rufus Thomas, Freda Payne, Jimmy Rogers, Starbuck, Bowlegs Miller, Dobie Gray, etc. etc.
Producer & writer Chips Moman invited Gary to move to Nashville in 1982, and dadburnit....HE DID IT! Since moving to Nashville, Gary has recorded with Tammy Wynette, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billy Preston, Sam Moore (SAM&DAVE), Webb Pierce, George Fox, and has played live shows or TV with Tim McGraw, Pam Tillis, Brenda Lee, David Lee Murphy, Bobby Bare, Johnny Lee, Shelly West, Sheb Wooley, Porter Waggoner, Guy Clark, Tracy Nelson, Sam the Sham,Edwin McCain, Randy Travis, blah blah blah.....
As a SONGWRITER, Gary has had cuts by country artists Keith Whitley, TG Shepard, Danny Davis; blues cuts by James Cotton, Carey Bell, Kenny Neal: rock&rb cuts by The Box Tops, Don Nix, Mac Gayden, Memphinati, The Big Dawgs, Fish Heads & Rice, and some people in Europe, like Steinar Albrigtson, Per Vervik, and G Thomas (Norway) a Swedish group.....the Meatballs, maybe......and various other people and places in Italy, Germany and Switzerland. Not to mention Canada, which has pictures of the Queen of England, but is however in North America directly North of Sandusky, Ohio.
As a TEACHER, Gary has taught private & semi-private guitar lessons for lots of years. After teaching guitar to songwriters in Nashville for nearly 20 years, he noticed that there was a DIRE NEED for a video for songwriting guitar players. He used all his Box Tops money to make this video (also available on DVD)called \"GUITAR PLAYING for SONGWRITERS\", of all things. It has been warmly received, especially by people in tropical climates. For the last 3 or 4 years, Gary has been doing workshops for SONGWRITER organizations, notably NSAI (Nashville Songwriters Association International) and The Songwriters Guild of America. Also the Songwriters Guilds of Armenia, Afghanistan (back again), Argentina, Arizona, Allemania, Africa and Akron. When he signed up for SGA, he accidentally joined ALL the SGAs, including the Somnambulists Guild of Albania and the Saab Grabbers of Alameda.
