Gary Wolfe, guitarist
An unsung hero of Canadian guitar, Gary Wolfe has been gracing musical circles for over 40 years. His may not be a household name, but that doesn't take the fact away that he's an absolute powerhouse, and those that have heard him play never forget the experience.
When he was 14, two things steered Gary on a musical course, one was hearing Duane Eddy's rendition of Peter Gunn, the other receiving the gift of a guitar from his parents that he'd spotted in the Sears catalogue. By the age of sixteen he was performing at community halls and school dances, going on to lead his own groups for nearly two decades and establishing a solid reputation on the club circuit for his distinct and polished sound.
Gary was introduced to jazz early in his career, and credits the music of Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin, Miles Davis, and Jimmy Page among his greatest influences. In 1984, Gary moved to L.A., where he spent the next four years working in a vintage guitar shop in Hollywood, playing gigs at different venues around town and teaching guitar. Gary continues his longtime friendship with top LA session player and great guitarist Mitch Holder. Gary cites performing with John Fogerty, Duane Eddy, and James Burton among the many highlights of his time in L.A.
With his style adept and broad, Gary plays jazz, blues, or rock with equal parts of finesse, fluency, and the intensity of a lion. An in-demand player in a variety of formats, Gary was recently a featured performer in the Calgary Blues Music Association's Guitarmania showcase, his appearance spawning the creation of Sun Up. Gary is also a sought-after teacher, running the successful Wolfe Guitar Studio in his hometown of Calgary for the past twenty years.
