A Simply Stunning Debut

The voice, the songs, the playing, the arrangements. Rachel Gaudry displays incredible talent and artistry on "Leaving Traces." My favourite tracks, "When Fortune Has Gone Dry" and "Does Anybody Hear Me" have haunted me in daily life since first hearing them. There is a rare beauty to her work and I cannot recommend this cd highly enough. Five Stars *****.

The debut offering from this Australian is brimming with melodic soft pop and a fine lyrical vocabulary. Sounding similar to a variety of female singer/songwriters, particularly Sheryl Crow circa The Globe Sessions or the Beautiful South circa Blue Is the Color, Gaudry maintains a fine balance between music and lyrics, often becoming soulful without sounding forced or tired. On the Outside and Come Away capture the essence of the album's style, from the touches of acoustic guitar and piano to the rewarding down-to-earth vocals void of high octave theatrics. The ten tunes seem to dance off the disc as effortlessly as Gaudry delivers them. A lyric in Sunshine in My Pocket seems to sum up the album totally: "And I do love the music you play." The album should have many listeners saying the same thing.

Thought-provoking lyrics, music with sophisticated complexity

Her song 'Tonight' has a that dark hue and melancholy that cut sharply against my perception of love as fireworks against a clear night. I am left with this poignant sensation of a unspoken plea for love that might not be. It is quite a feeling to be left with.
I don't have enough space to write about the other songs, but not a single one misses the mark she aims for. I am from New York City and I bought this CD simply on recommendation from a friend. I am very glad I bought it. I have had friends listen to it with me. Same conclusions. Rachel, heck of a piece of work, this CD!
