GAVIOTAS unite alt/punk, metal and powerpop to craft their heavy yet hook-laden music. With socially-conscious themes and balls that have been lacking in rock lately, GAVIOTAS sound like a revolution with guitars instead of guns.

notes
GAVIOTAS is a highly dedicated and energetic group of rock musicians from San Francisco, CA. With a combined 60 years of experience on their respective instruments, Simon Timony (lead vocals / guitar / songwriting) Rafael Corral AKA Tre (bass / vocals) and Jeff Sheahan (drums) have taken the 'all or nothing' plunge of pursuing the American rock music dream through socially conscious, heavy, yet hook-laden tunes.
GAVIOTAS are currently promoting their 4-song E.P. 'Unite!' ; produced by Eric Drew Feldman (P.J. Harvey, Pixies' Frank Black, Captain Beefheart). To get people out to shows they take an innovative approach to making new fans and selling CDs; peddling the album on the streets of San Francisco guerilla style, while collecting e-mails and phone numbers (a tactic Simon learned while working on local, grassroots political campaigns).
Former line-ups have played The Cherry Bar and Studio Z before recording their album in 2005. The music could be described as accessible punk/metal with hooks, drifting around pop, experimental and dub, while always staying true to their one unique sound. Influences include: Radiohead, Slipknot, Nirvana, The Clash, The Residents (Simon's godfathers' band), The Mars Volta, fellow San Franciscans Metallica, Gershwin (George) and especially J.S. Bach. "Even though Mozart was the rock star, Bach wrote the best songs," Simon says.
-THE MEMBERS-
*Simon Timony *the leader / cute guy type* has been around music his entire life. His parents ran an independent record company in The City during the 80's and his earliest memories are of being around late night studio sessions and learning guitar (left handed) from friend/mentor, musician Snakefinger. In the early 90's, the family became friends with the Nirvana crew. Simon, at age 10, befriended and mentored by Kurdt Cobain, was a constant witness to countless shows from stage-side; becoming inspired again to pick up the guitar himself (right handed this time) and has played ever since. His former band The Stinky Puffs (which included Cody, son of Sonic Youth's Lee Ranaldo) was the only group to play with Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic post Kurdt . If Simon was a drink, he would be green tea (hot, of course)!
*Rafael 'Tre' Corral* the big brother / funny guy type* has played bass for 16 years. Playing in various bands in the Santa Barbara scene, he moved to San Francisco with his band, The Cheshire Jones, in the late 90's. After the band dissolved, 'Tre' stayed in The City eventually meeting Simon. They have been best friends ever since. If Tre was a drink, he would be grape drink (not grape juice).
*Jeff Sheahan* the badass / tough guy type* has played drums since he was 4 years old. A native New Yorker, Jeff has played in many diverse bands over the years and served honorably for 4 years Marine Corp. He also sleeps to a metronome to perfect his timing on the drums. If Jeff was a drink, he would be a guiness (with a shot of Jack).
-*-
GAVIOTAS takes their name from the Colombian village 'GAVIOTAS ' whose inhabitants dedicate themselves to creating some of the most ultra efficient alternative energy sources in the world.
For over thirty years scientists, engineers, artisans and ex-street kids have made sustainable development and appropriate technology real in a place called GAVIOTAS.
Wrenched from ecological disaster and great political turbulence, this miracle of social and environmental hope has achieved peace, prosperity and the regeneration of an ancient rain forest.
Sixteen hours from the nearest major city, Gaviotas villagers have invented ultra efficient methods of harnessing natural renewable energy sources; such as wind turbines, solar collectors and soil-free systems for medicinal and edible crops.
The United Nations has named the village a model for the developing world;
a village to re-invent the world.
Each inhabitant of Gaviotas plays a musical instrument.
