Album Notes

Gay Beast was formed during the spring of 2005 in Minneapolis by DaniMal (keyboards/vocals) and Gela (drums/percussion) under the premise of making queer-political music more ambitious in arrangement than their previous bands. An ad was placed online and Icky Rot (guitar) soon joined.

Numerous stylistic touchstones include the nerviest asymmetric moments of Devo, the scrape and squeal of early 00's six-string renegades Arab on Radar and Erase Errata, the frenetic drum work of Hella, the linear arrangements of TWIN (formerly King Cobra), the chaotic-seeming polyrhythms of Captain Beefheart, and the vocalizations of Tim Hodgkinson and Yoko Ono. The band has shared the stage with such diverse acts as AIDS Wolf, Glass Candy, Made in Mexico, TWIN, XBXRX, Tracy & the Plastics, Marnie Stern, Neptune, Clipd Beaks, and many others, feeling at home playing with acts of any radical stripe.

“Disrobics,” a collection of songs a year-and-a-half in the making, was recorded in the fall of 2006 by Mike Wisti, whose Albatross Studio has boasted the likes of heavy weirdos the Seawhores, avant-instrumentalists TVBC, circuit-bent dub outfit Skoal Kodiak, and then-Minneapolis-based Vaz. The album was self-released on CD in early 2007, the art of Edie Fake hand-screened on every cover.
